Zaheer Khan Takes Charge as CSK Head Coach for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings have picked a heavyweight to steer their next chapter. Zaheer Khan, the left-arm spearhead who once terrorised top orders, will now run the show from the dugout as head coach for IPL 2027.

His appointment ends one of the longest and most influential coaching tenures in T20 cricket. Stephen Fleming’s 18-year association with CSK – a stretch that defined the franchise’s identity as much as any player in yellow – is over, the New Zealander having moved on to lead England’s men’s Test side.

CSK have not gone for a like-for-like replacement. They have gone for a statement.

From tormentor to tactician at Chepauk

Zaheer knows the IPL from the inside out. He retired from the league in 2017 after stints with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, finishing with 102 wickets in 100 matches at 27.27. Those numbers sit alongside a towering India career: 610 international wickets across formats and a central role in the country’s rise through the 2000s.

Now he walks into Chepauk on the other side of the boundary rope.

"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL," Zaheer said via a CSK release. He has faced the Super Kings often enough to know the scale of the job and the stage he is stepping onto. The contests, he said, were ones he “thoroughly enjoyed,” and the roar at MA Chidambaram Stadium – driven by the “Superfans at Chepauk” – clearly left a mark.

"I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history," he added. That word – legacy – is doing a lot of work here. CSK are not just hiring a coach; they are choosing the guardian of what comes after Fleming and, in time, after the last of the old core.

A CV built in boardrooms and dressing rooms

Zaheer’s post-playing career has been anything but ornamental. Mumbai Indians moved quickly to tap into his cricket brain, naming him Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019. He later became their head of global development, shaping pathways and structures rather than just match-day plans.

The league kept circling back to him. Lucknow Super Giants brought him in as mentor for IPL 2025, looking for exactly what CSK now seek – a calm, strategic mind who understands fast bowling, pressure moments and how to grow young talent. He left LSG before the following season, and the next big offer has come from Chennai.

For a franchise that prides itself on continuity, this is evolution with intent, not upheaval.

CSK powerbrokers back a “cricketing brain”

Inside the CSK hierarchy, the enthusiasm is clear. Owner Rupa Gurunath framed the appointment as both a nod to Zaheer’s past and an investment in the future.

"We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings," she said. "Zaheer's distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise."

That “core” has carried CSK through title runs, comebacks from suspension, and a seamless ability to stay relevant as squads turned over. Protecting it – and refreshing it – is the central challenge of the next cycle.

Managing Director KS Viswanathan went straight to the heart of why Zaheer fits.

“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s. He's one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family."

That word again: family. CSK have long sold themselves as one. Fleming embodied it. Zaheer now has to inhabit it.

A new voice for a familiar machine

The tactical demands of the IPL have shifted since Zaheer last bowled a ball in it. Data science, match-ups, micro-plans for each over – these are now standard tools. Zaheer has watched that evolution from the front row with Mumbai and Lucknow. CSK will expect him to fuse that modern detail with the old-school instincts that made him such a compelling operator with the new ball.

He inherits a dressing room used to stability, clarity and a particular brand of calm. Changing that would be a mistake. Sharpening it, refreshing it, pushing a new generation of quicks and allrounders to carry the franchise’s weight – that is where Zaheer’s reputation as a mentor will be tested.

The Fleming era gave CSK their shape and their swagger. The Zaheer era will decide how long both can last.
