Alexander Zverev Secures Year-End No. 1 Spot Among ATP Legends

Alexander Zverev is experiencing the best season of his career. After falling short in three consecutive Grand Slam finals, he finally won his first major title at this year's French Open. Although he lost the Wimbledon final soon after, he bounced back impressively by taking the US Open crown.

The German veteran’s dedication has earned him numerous rewards, including clinching the year-end ATP number one ranking. This achievement makes him the 30th player in men's tennis history to reach number one and only the 20th to finish the year at the top spot.

The Challenge Ahead: Staying on Top

Maintaining his hold on the number one ranking will be a key aim for the 29-year-old. Yet, he still trails behind several players who have finished multiple years as the year-end number one, led by Novak Djokovic.

Players with the Most Year-End Number Ones

  • Novak Djokovic: 8
  • Pete Sampras: 6
  • Roger Federer: 5
  • Jimmy Connors: 5
  • Rafael Nadal: 5
  • Ivan Lendl: 4
  • John McEnroe: 4
  • Bjorn Borg: 2
  • Lleyton Hewitt: 2
  • Stefan Edberg: 2
  • Carlos Alcaraz: 2

This prestigious list highlights an elite group, and Zverev can take pride in joining it. Though he has just one year-end number one title so far, he stands alongside players like Jannik Sinner, Jim Courier, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and Andy Murray, who also achieved this once.

Current Form and Upcoming Goals

At present, Zverev is resting from competition after his recent loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Shanghai Masters semifinals. Davidovich Fokina went on to claim the title by defeating Rafael Jodar in the final.

Interestingly, Davidovich Fokina holds more Masters 1000 titles this year than Zverev, who has secured only the French Open and US Open titles. However, Zverev has a chance to equal Davidovich Fokina’s tally by competing in the Paris Masters, which serves as preparation for the ATP Finals in Turin.
