WTA Finals Spot Still Up for Grabs as Muchova, Swiatek, and Kostyuk Battle for Last Place
With just one spot left to claim at the WTA Finals, the competition is fierce. Seven players have secured their places, leaving only three contenders vying for the final position: Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek, and Marta Kostyuk. Currently, Muchova leads with 4,735 points, followed by Swiatek at 4,190 and Kostyuk trailing with 3,921.
Swiatek’s Recent Setback
Iga Swiatek had an opportunity to extend her lead by winning the Wuhan title, but she was unexpectedly defeated in the semifinals by Maja Chwalinska. Swiatek played below her usual form due to an injury, and it remains uncertain how this might influence her performance in upcoming events. Should her recovery slow down, her chances to qualify for the Finals could diminish significantly.
Since 2020, Swiatek has been a regular at the WTA Finals, even taking home the trophy in 2023. This year marks her first season since 2021 without a Grand Slam title. Aside from a strong run in Toronto, her overall results haven’t compensated for the absence of a Major win.
Muchova’s Breakthrough Season
Karolina Muchova hasn’t captured a Slam this year either, but she has enjoyed her best season yet with consistent results. Staying mostly healthy, she claimed her first WTA 1000 title and reached the Wimbledon final. Although Muchova ranks seventh in the WTA race standings, Linda Noskova’s Wimbledon victory has granted Noskova automatic qualification ahead of Muchova.
Kostyuk’s Steady Rise
Marta Kostyuk remains a contender thanks to her breakthrough season featuring a first WTA 1000 title and two Grand Slam semifinal appearances. Her steady climb keeps her very much in the conversation for the last Finals spot.
Upcoming Tournaments Could Decide the Race
It’s critical for Swiatek and Kostyuk to amass points quickly, while Muchova can afford to rest next week. Muchova will skip upcoming tournaments, but Swiatek and Kostyuk are both entered in the WTA 500 event in Ningbo. Swiatek holds the second seed and Kostyuk the third. Neither can surpass Muchova by winning there, but a title for Swiatek would narrow the gap, and a win for Kostyuk might allow her to overtake Swiatek depending on the latter’s performance.
Both players face tough first-round matches: Swiatek against Marie Bouzkova and Kostyuk facing Ekaterina Alexandrova. If they perform according to their seedings, they could clash in the semifinals—a match with significant implications for the race.
Following Ningbo, both Swiatek and Kostyuk are set to compete in Tokyo, another WTA 500 event with a strong field including Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, and Iva Jovic. A strong showing in these back-to-back tournaments could propel either player into the final qualifying spot, especially since Muchova is absent from these events.
If the decision drags beyond Tokyo, lower-tier 250-point tournaments remain options, though making it to Indian Wells for the WTA Finals on November 9th would be a challenge. None of the three contenders are listed for any tournaments in the weeks after Tokyo, so Ningbo and Tokyo will likely determine who joins the Finals in California.
The Stakes Are High
With Muchova choosing not to play in the upcoming events, the outcome rests on Swiatek and Kostyuk. Their performances will decide their fate, presenting a demanding yet achievable path.
Last year, Elena Rybakina clinched a late spot through a Tokyo run and went on to win the WTA Finals, setting the stage for her best season yet. Securing this final slot isn’t just a reward for solid results; it could launch a strong start to the next season.
All three—Muchova, Swiatek, and Kostyuk—have played significant roles in the story of this WTA season. Whoever earns the last ticket will deserve their place on the Finals stage, while the others will prepare for a fresh attempt next year.
