UFC Offered Dricus Du Plessis a One-Night Four-Man Tournament for Light Heavyweight Title Shot
Dricus Du Plessis recently shared his intention to move up to light heavyweight to pursue a second UFC title. Known as "Stillknocks," he showcased a commanding performance against Kamaru Usman at UFC Oklahoma, winning by unanimous decision. Although reclaiming the middleweight belt remains his main goal, Du Plessis is open to competing at 205 pounds when the timing is right.
UFC's Unique Tournament Proposal
His coach, Morne Visser, revealed that the UFC approached their team with an unusual offer. They proposed that Du Plessis participate in a one-night, four-man tournament to decide the next contender for the light heavyweight champion, Carlos Ulberg. The other fighters reportedly included Jiri Prochazka, Magomed Ankalaev, and Navajo Stirling.
Visser explained on the Fight Forecast podcast that the UFC asked Du Plessis to step up to light heavyweight just three weeks before the event. The tournament format would have all four fighters compete in the same night—winners advancing until a final winner emerged to face Ulberg. This kind of event hasn't been seen since the UFC's early days, making it an extraordinary proposal.
Why The Team Declined
Despite the opportunity, Du Plessis' camp declined the offer. Visser noted that Du Plessis cuts over 45 pounds to make middleweight, so moving up quickly without adequate preparation wasn't feasible. Gaining weight alone wouldn't suffice to match established light heavyweights, especially with only a short window to get ready.
Visser also mentioned that Du Plessis is currently enjoying his honeymoon and aims to return to competition in early 2027, likely around late February or March.
Future Plans and Potential Matchups
The jump to 205 pounds remains part of Du Plessis' long-term vision, but his team prefers not to rush the transition. Recently, a potential fight against Magomed Ankalaev has been discussed, adding another option for Du Plessis to weigh before deciding his next steps.
