Worcestershire Re-sign Usama Mir for County Championship Final Push

Worcestershire have turned to a familiar face for the run-in, re-signing Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir for the rest of the County Championship season as cover for injured all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel.

Mir, who made his first-class debut for the Pears in 2023, returns for a second red-ball stint at New Road and will be available for the club’s final three Division Two fixtures, starting with Tuesday’s home clash against Northamptonshire.

This is no short-term stranger dropped into a dressing room at full tilt. Mir has already been part of the Worcestershire fabric this year, featuring in their white-ball campaign after agreeing a three-year T20 deal earlier in the season. From 2027 he will be classed as a ‘local’ player, underlining just how invested both parties are in the relationship.

Head coach Alan Richardson knows exactly what he is getting.

“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” he told the club’s website, welcoming back a bowler trusted to deliver under pressure.

The timing matters. With a tight turnaround and Swanepoel ruled out, Worcestershire had little room to hesitate. Richardson admitted as much, stressing the need to move quickly in the market and hailing Mir’s swift return as “a real boost” ahead of Tuesday.

So Mir comes back into a squad chasing a strong finish, a leg-spinner with international pedigree stepping once more into the county grind. The stage is familiar. The stakes are higher.
