Will Young Cleared for Warwickshire's Title Decider

Warwickshire will have Will Young back at the top of the order for their County Championship title shootout next week, after a late and unexpected visa issue briefly threatened to derail the New Zealander’s end-of-season stint.

The 33-year-old Test opener, re-signed in June to bolster the Bears for the final six Championship fixtures, had played the first four of those games without fuss. Then came the call.

On the morning of Warwickshire’s match against Essex at Chelmsford, with players already into their final preparations, the England and Wales Cricket Board contacted the club at 10:20 BST. Play was due to start at 10:30. Young, they were told, could not be selected because of an unresolved visa matter.

The problem did not stop at Edgbaston. It also affected his New Zealand Test team-mate Henry Nicholls, who is on a parallel six-game deal with Somerset. Nicholls’ clearance, though, landed the night before Somerset’s fixture, giving the West Country side just enough time to breathe.

Warwickshire were not so fortunate.

By the time the green light finally arrived for Young, the Bears had already redrawn their plans. Zen Malik was promoted to open, a late reshuffle on a morning when the dressing room had expected routine. The disruption could easily have seeped into the performance.

Instead, Malik seized his chance. His composed second-innings half-century underpinned Warwickshire’s second emphatic two-day win in a row, backing up their rapid success before Essex with another ruthless display.

Afterwards, first team coach Ian Westwood laid out the chaos of the preceding hours.

“Will got a call saying that he had a problem with his visa,” he told BBC Radio WM. “The application is normally pretty standard and it had gone in via his agent. But it hadn't come back and we were in a race against time. Everyone at the club did everything they could.

“I believe Somerset might have been in the same boat and theirs came though the night before. Ours came though at 20 past 10, which was a bit too late. It was too late to play in this game but he's available for next week.”

Warwickshire later confirmed the situation in a brief statement: “Will Young was unavailable for selection due to an outstanding visa matter that has since been resolved between his agent and the ECB.”

The episode capped a demanding spell on the road for the Bears. A two-and-a-half week swing through Hampshire, Glamorgan and Essex delivered three straight wins and kept their title push on track, even with Young unexpectedly sidelined at Chelmsford.

Now they head back to Edgbaston, where the season’s narrative tightens. Their final game, at home to relegation-threatened Leicestershire from 24 September, will decide whether this late surge ends in silverware.

Young is cleared. The visa scare is over. With the championship on the line, Warwickshire’s first-choice opener is back exactly when they need him most.
