South Africa's ODI Series Against Australia: Bavuma Leads with Coetzee Back
Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa into a fresh home summer, and he will do it with real pace at his back and a notable name returning to the fold.
Gerald Coetzee, the tearaway quick who last played a 50-over international at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, has been recalled for the three-match ODI series against Australia later this month. Three years after his last appearance in this format, the 25-year-old is back in a Proteas squad that leans heavily on fast-bowling firepower.
Bavuma at the helm, Coetzee back in the pack
Bavuma, confirmed as captain, fronts a group built around a strong seam unit. Coetzee joins Ottneil Baartman, teenage left-armer Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi and the allround pair of Corbin Bosch and Marco Jansen in a pace attack that looks designed to attack, not just contain.
Spin will again have a clear role. Lions captain Bjorn Fortuin, currently leading the Proteas on their white-ball tour of Namibia, and Keshav Maharaj round out the bowling options, giving head coach Shukri Conrad the balance he has spoken about so often.
The batting has a familiar spine, but with some careful tweaks.
Aiden Markram, fresh off another heavy year of white-ball cricket, will be available for the second and third Dafabet ODIs. Up top, Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi offer a blend of experience, form and left-right variation. Behind them, Matthew Breetzke, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs bring the sort of middle-order power Conrad wants for the modern 50-over game.
He has been clear about the blueprint: a middle order that can explode, but also sit in, absorb pressure and take the innings deep when conditions demand it.
A familiar foe, a fresh stage
The series opens on 24 September at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban, the first assignment of the home summer. From there, the teams move to the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 27 September for the annual Dafabet Pink Day, before closing out at the NWC Oval in Potchefstroom on 30 September.
Australia know this terrain. They were last here in 2023 and walked into a storm. South Africa, 2-0 down in a five-match ODI series, roared back to win 3-2 in one of their more compelling recent comebacks. That memory lingers, and it colours everything about this latest contest.
Conrad has framed this series as more than just a heavyweight early-season clash. With the next World Cup just over a year away, he views these matches as a crucial step in shaping the group that will travel, and in testing combinations that will be refined further against Bangladesh and England later in the season.
The roles are being defined now, not six months out.
Rabada sidelined, doors open
One name is missing. Kagiso Rabada will sit out the series through injury, a significant absence in any context.
For Conrad, it also creates opportunity. Coetzee’s return is one obvious storyline, especially with reports that he has been bowling with serious pace. Baartman, who has already shown his value at the death, gets another chance to prove that his domestic nous translates consistently to the 50-over international stage. Maphaka, still in the early chapters of his professional career, finds himself learning alongside established names.
Every over they bowl against Australia will carry weight.
Pink Day spotlight
The second ODI at the Wanderers will again double as Pink Day, a fixture that long ago moved beyond the boundaries of a standard bilateral. The stadium drenched in pink, the noise, the cause – it has become one of the standout events on South Africa’s cricket calendar.
The Proteas know the responsibility that comes with it. The day is about more than runs and wickets, with the match playing a central role in raising awareness and support in the fight against breast cancer. The cricket, though, rarely takes a back seat. The Wanderers under a sea of pink, against Australia, with a World Cup cycle building in the background, is as big as a home ODI gets.
