South Africa Loses Baartman to Injury Ahead of Australia ODIs

South Africa’s build-up to the ODI series against Australia has taken an early hit, with seamer Ottneil Baartman ruled out through injury just as he was working his way back into the international frame.

Cricket South Africa confirmed on Sunday that the 31-year-old has suffered a left hamstring injury, cutting short a comeback that had gathered momentum over the past few months. The timing could hardly be worse for a bowler who had only just returned to domestic action.

Baartman turned out for Dolphins in their CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 season-opener against Titans this week, his first competitive red-ball outing since a busy winter that included a stint in Major League Cricket in June and July. But the outing in Durban raised alarms: he bowled only five overs in Titans’ lone innings and did not come out to bat in Dolphins’ second dig. CSA’s medical update followed soon after, confirming the hamstring setback and ending any hope of him featuring against Australia.

It continues a stop-start period for Baartman in national colours. He was part of South Africa’s tour of India in November-December last year but has not played an ODI since. His most recent appearance for the Proteas came in the New Zealand T20I series in March, before he slipped out of the immediate white-ball picture and set about rebuilding form and rhythm through franchise cricket.

With Baartman sidelined, the selectors have turned to a newer face: Duan Jansen. The left-arm seamer, who only recently broke into the senior setup during the Namibia T20I tri-series, has been named as his replacement and will link up with the squad on September 19 when they assemble in Durban.

Jansen is not arriving cold. He has already made his ODI debut in the ongoing series in Namibia, where South Africa returned to 50-over cricket for the first time since that India tour. In the second ODI, he produced a standout spell of 4 for 31, underlining why the selectors view him as more than just a stopgap option. With South Africa already 2-0 up in the three-match series, he was one of three changes in the final fixture, a sign of growing trust rather than simple rotation.

The reshuffle comes against the backdrop of a pace attack already stretched. Kagiso Rabada remains unavailable as he continues his own recovery from a hamstring injury, depriving South Africa of their premier strike bowler for another marquee assignment. Anrich Nortje, still working his way back to full fitness and form, was not considered.

That has reopened the door for Gerald Coetzee, who has not featured in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup but now returns to bolster the fast-bowling stocks. Around him, the attack carries a blend of youth, height, and raw pace: Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Corbin Bosch round out a group that will be asked to shoulder a heavy load against an Australian side that rarely lets up.

For Baartman, the road bends away from the spotlight again, at least for now. For Duan Jansen, it points sharply upward, towards Australia and the kind of series that can fast-track a career or expose its edges. South Africa’s next few weeks will reveal which it turns out to be.
