LeBron James Managing Chronic Arthritis in Left Foot as He Starts 24th NBA Season with 76ers

At 41 years old, LeBron James is stepping into his 24th NBA season while dealing with chronic arthritis in his left foot. According to a report from ESPN's Dave McMenamin, this condition is a significant part of his daily training routine with the Philadelphia 76ers.

James begins each day at the 76ers' training facility promptly at 7:45 a.m., arriving by helicopter after flying in from New York. His longtime trainer, Mike Mancias, guides him through stretches and body activations designed to prepare him physically. Particular care is given to his left foot to manage the arthritis symptoms, followed by focused work on his lower back.

Last season, James missed about a month due to sciatica while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. His current regimen with Mancias aims to reduce any lingering effects from that injury. Despite various challenges over his career, James has consistently played at least 55 games every season not interrupted by COVID-19.

Transition to the 76ers and Early Training Camp Insights

This season marks James’ first with the Philadelphia 76ers after signing as a free agent during the summer. Though he kept fans waiting on his decision—considering offers from five teams—he eventually chose Philadelphia without making a public spectacle like his previous "Decision" announcement.

Training camp revealed early chemistry-building efforts among key players. Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and James spent time working together on two-man plays to prepare for defensive traps they expect to face. One insider explained,

"All four of those guys are going to be trapped somehow during the game, whether it’s in the post or on the wing. We worked a lot on passing out of the post, making the extra pass to the corner."

The projected starting lineup also includes 21-year-old VJ Edgecombe, who was not initially part of these sessions but is expected to join soon. Edgecombe took pride in creating a new group chat for the team before James arrived, joking about how he had to ask Tyrese Maxey to add LeBron since he didn’t have James’ number himself.

Preseason and Season Opener Details

The 76ers will start their preseason without some stars, including LeBron James, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Anfernee Simons for their game against the Knicks on Monday night.

The regular season kicks off on Tuesday, October 20. Philadelphia’s second opening night game places them at Madison Square Garden, where James is anticipated to make his official debut with the team.
