Cason Wallace and Oklahoma City Thunder Agree on Five-Year, $139M Contract Extension
Cason Wallace and the Oklahoma City Thunder have come to terms on a five-year extension worth $139 million, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The agreement was finalized before Monday's deadline for players from the 2023 NBA Draft class to sign rookie scale extensions.
If the deal hadn’t been reached in time, Wallace would have played the final year of his rookie contract under a team option and then entered the 2026-27 offseason as a restricted free agent. This extension locks down a key part of the Thunder's core as they aim for their second NBA title within three seasons.
Wallace’s Growth and Role with the Thunder
Selected 10th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft out of Kentucky, Wallace has steadily expanded his role each season. He started 13 games as a rookie, increased that to 43 starts in the 2024-25 campaign, and became an important rotation player on Oklahoma City’s championship squad. Last season, he started 58 games and is expected to become a full-time starter in the upcoming season, building on his average of 26.6 minutes per game from 2025-26.
During 77 games last season, Wallace averaged:
- 8.6 points
- 3.1 rebounds
- 2.6 assists
- 1.9 steals
- 0.4 blocks
- Shot 35.1% on about 3.7 three-point attempts per game
Thunder’s Strategy and Future
The Thunder traded away their 3-and-D specialist Luguentz Dort during the offseason, signaling confidence that Wallace will take on a bigger role. Now with this new contract, the team has secured all five starters on long-term deals.
The Thunder's championship window remains open, with the core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, and now Cason Wallace signed through at least the 2028-29 season.
