Kuldeep Yadav Earns Player of the Match Over Virat Kohli Despite Century in IND vs WI 1st ODI

Virat Kohli delivered a powerful unbeaten 139 off 88 balls as India chased down a 296-run target against West Indies in the first ODI at Greenfield International Cricket Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. Despite this impressive batting display, the Player of the Match award went to Kuldeep Yadav, who took 4 wickets for 40 runs.

India won the match by eight wickets, with Shubman Gill and Kohli both scoring centuries. Kuldeep’s bowling spell was pivotal in restricting West Indies to 295 for 7 after a strong start from their openers.

Kuldeep Yadav’s Impact with the Ball

West Indies looked set for a big total after Justin Greaves scored his maiden ODI century and John Campbell added 62 runs, putting on a 135-run opening partnership. Kuldeep broke the momentum by dismissing Campbell, followed by key wickets including Shai Hope, Greaves, and Jewel Andrew, slowing the visitors to 198 for 5 and eventually under 300 runs.

Who Chooses the Player of the Match?

The decision on the Player of the Match is made by the commentary panel, often consulting umpires and match officials, but it remains subjective without specific rules guiding the choice. Usually, batting performances get more recognition, yet Kuldeep’s performance earned him the award over Kohli.

Why Kuldeep Was Favored Over Kohli

There was no official explanation for selecting Kuldeep ahead of Kohli, making the choice subjective. Yet Kuldeep’s crucial four-wicket haul, especially after the visitors’ flying start, made a significant difference in the game’s outcome.

"I actually loved the batting from Shubman and Virat bhai, it was a special innings from them. It feels awkward to receive the Man of the Match award seeing the way Virat batted, it was an outstanding innings," Kuldeep said during the post-match ceremony."I think personally I like my rhythm, to be very honest. I was very calm in my rhythm and just trying to bowl whatever I felt like bowling, just varying the pace, variations were superb, just reading the batters, where they're going to hit me, and yeah, I bowled very, very, very good in rhythm."

Reactions and Perspectives

Kohli’s unbeaten 139 was clearly one of the standout performances, and many expected him to clinch the award. The decision sparked discussions about how Player of the Match honors are awarded, especially when bowlers deliver match-winning spells but do not receive due recognition.

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticized this pattern, pointing out that bowlers sometimes get overlooked despite crucial contributions.
