Kate Koval's Transfer: A Journey Beyond Basketball
Kate Koval’s transfer tells a story that stretches far beyond the court.
The 20-year-old Ukrainian center, who played every game for Louisiana State University last season, has left LSU and resurfaced at Baylor University in Texas after a highly unusual mid-offseason move cleared by the NCAA.
This was not a routine transfer. It was triggered by a war.
Koval averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds across 35 games in her freshman year, a reliable interior presence on a powerhouse program. Then LSU signed 17-year-old Russian player Anna Minaeva. Shortly after, LSU announced that Koval was leaving for “personal reasons.”
Those reasons did not stay private for long.
On Instagram, Koval laid bare the weight she has been carrying since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
“My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” she wrote. “For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes.”
The signing of a Russian teammate, against that backdrop, forced a reckoning.
“The timing of this situation and the deep personal effect it has had on me, my family and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me,” Koval explained.
Once she stepped away, the clock should have been against her. The NCAA transfer window had already closed in April, shutting off the standard route for a player to move and play immediately.
LSU, though, requested a transfer waiver on her behalf. The NCAA granted it.
Under NCAA rules, student-athletes can receive such waivers outside the portal window only in cases of extenuating circumstances or events unrelated to sport and beyond the athlete’s control. Those events must also have occurred after the last chance to enter the transfer portal.
The governing body accepted that Koval’s situation met that threshold, opening the door for her to join Baylor despite the calendar saying she should have been stuck.
For Baylor, it is a significant addition: a 6-foot-plus post player with a year of high-level SEC experience and the resilience forged by a life shaped by conflict. For Koval, it is a chance to keep her career moving while aligning her environment with her conscience.
BBC Sport has contacted LSU to clarify the specific terms under which the waiver was requested.
The box scores will show only that Kate Koval changed teams. The reality is that a young athlete has tried to carve out a small space of control in a life overshadowed by war, and the NCAA has, unusually, allowed the rules to bend around that reality.
