Justin Gaethje Stands by Ilia Topuria After UFC Freedom 250 Loss
Justin Gaethje, the UFC lightweight champion, spoke out in defense of his opponent Ilia Topuria after their June bout at UFC Freedom 250. Despite Topuria’s corner stopping the fight in the fourth round, Gaethje emphasized that Topuria did not quit on the stool.
The main event ended with a TKO when Topuria’s team threw in the towel due to the damage he had sustained during the fight. Many fans and fighters have questioned whether Topuria gave up, but Gaethje disagrees.
Gaethje's Perspective on the Fight Stoppage
"He didn’t quit on the stool, his body was too compromised to continue fighting. He didn’t make the call, his coaches made the call because they’re there to protect him. My coaches are in my corner to protect me in those times," Gaethje said during the One Night with Steiny podcast.
What’s Next: Rematch or New Challenger?
Speculation surrounds the possibility of a rematch between Gaethje and Topuria. While Arman Tsarukyan currently looks like the more deserving contender, having won six consecutive fights, the UFC often prioritizes high-profile matchups. If the organization views a Gaethje-Topuria rematch as the biggest fight in the lightweight division, it may happen before Tsarukyan gets his title shot.
Before any fight plans are made, the question remains whether Gaethje will continue competing. He has not decided if he will retire or pursue another fight. The damage taken in the Topuria match could influence his decision, but for now, the UFC is allowing him time to decide.
