Justin Arana Activated for Gilas Pilipinas vs Iran
Justin Arana’s wait is over.
The Converge big man has been activated for Gilas Pilipinas’ clash with Iran in the fourth window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Mall of Asia Arena, stepping in for the injured Carl Tamayo.
Tamayo hurt his ankle in the Nationals’ nerve-wracking 82-81 escape against Jordan in their opening game of the window, forcing the coaching staff into an early frontcourt reshuffle. Arana, who had already been part of the initial pool before preparations began, now gets his first official run with the national team.
It’s a significant leap. From hopeful invitee to full-fledged Gilas big man in a matter of days.
Arana joins a towering frontline headlined by Kai Sotto, June Mar Fajardo and AJ Edu, with Justine Baltazar and Troy Rosario also available to bang bodies and protect the rim. Size will not be a problem; chemistry and composure will decide how that length translates against a physical Iranian side.
On the wings, Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos and Chris Newsome provide versatility and shot-making, each capable of sliding between roles depending on the matchup. Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez and Juan Gomez de Liaño will handle the backcourt duties, blending playmaking, pressure defense and downhill aggression.
Across the floor waits an Iranian squad stung by a 93-91 defeat to New Zealand in its first outing. A team with that kind of narrow loss in its system rarely turns up flat. It usually comes back angry.
For Gilas, the equation is clear. Protect home court. Integrate Arana on the fly. Match Iran’s response to adversity with their own growing belief.
On a Sunday night at Mall of Asia Arena, a newcomer to the program walks into the spotlight, and a bruised opponent walks in desperate. One of them will leave with their window back on track.
