India Names Full-Strength Squad for Afghanistan T20Is as Bumrah Returns

India have signalled their intent for the Afghanistan T20I series, naming a near full-strength squad that blends established firepower with a few fitness-dependent gambles – and a marquee return.

Shreyas Iyer will lead the side for the three-match series in New Delhi, but the headline is clear enough: Jasprit Bumrah is back in T20I colours. The fast-bowling spearhead, whose last outing in the format came in the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in March, has been recalled to anchor a bowling group that suddenly looks very close to first-choice.

Sanju Samson, left out of the Zimbabwe T20Is, also walks straight back into the setup. He is one of two designated wicketkeepers alongside Ishan Kishan, giving India both explosiveness and flexibility through the middle and late overs. Samson’s return is one of eight changes from the Zimbabwe tour, underlining just how experimental that trip was compared to the more serious tone of this assignment.

Rinku Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Harsh Dubey, Prabhsimran Singh, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Mayank Yadav and Ashok Sharma are the ones to make way as the squad tightens up. The experimentation window closes; the audition room empties. Afghanistan will not be facing a second-string side.

Bowling core restored

The attack, in particular, carries a familiar edge. The selectors have gone back to a structure that closely resembles the one used on the England tour, restoring frontline options and trimming the fringe.

Shedge, Prince and Prasidh, all part of that England trip, do not feature this time. Instead, Bumrah returns to lead a pace unit that includes left-armer Arshdeep Singh and mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Harshit Rana has also been named, though his place in the XI – or even the squad on match day – hinges on fitness clearance.

He is not alone there. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar have been picked with the same asterisk: included, but subject to passing fitness tests. If cleared, they offer precisely what modern T20 captains crave – multi-dimensional cricketers who can plug gaps with bat and ball and stretch the balance of the side.

Batting spine around Iyer

Around Iyer, India have built a batting group that can shift gears quickly. Abhishek Sharma brings top-order aggression, while Tilak Varma, named vice-captain, continues his rapid rise as a left-handed fulcrum in the middle order. Shivam Dube offers raw power and a seam-bowling option, with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar (if fit) adding depth and control.

In the spin department, Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi give India contrasting threats – one a hard-to-pick mystery bowler, the other a skiddy, attacking leg-spinner who thrives in the middle overs.

Three nights in Delhi

All three T20Is will be staged in New Delhi, on September 13, 15 and 17. One venue, three games, and a clear look at how close this group is to India’s preferred T20 core.
