India Secures Shooting Silver and MMA Bronze at Aichi-Nagoya 2026

India’s campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 sprang into life on Sunday, and it was the women who lit the torch.

In the 10m air rifle team event, Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K. Vinod pieced together a composed, high-class performance to deliver India’s first medal of these Games — a silver. The trio totalled 1898.0, a score good enough to stand above the rest of the field, with only the formidable Chinese line-up able to push past them for gold.

The pressure of an opening-day final can shred even seasoned competitors. Elavenil treated it as a stage. After anchoring the team to silver, she stepped back onto the range for the individual final and produced another assured display, finishing second once more. One day, two medals. Her personal tally doubled, and with it India’s overall count.

While the shots rang out in the shooting hall, another Indian was quietly forcing her way into the medal picture on a very different stage. In women’s traditional 60kg mixed martial arts, Suchika Tairyal fought her way into the semifinals, a run that guarantees at least a bronze under the tournament format. The colour of that medal is still to be decided, but India’s combat contingent is already on the board.

The first gold medal of the entire Games, though, went elsewhere. Japan’s Takumi Hojo claimed that honour in the men’s triathlon, negotiating the brutal swim-bike-run test better than the rest to secure both the title and a small slice of Asian Games history.

By mid-afternoon on September 20, India had its foothold: shooting silver in the bag, an MMA bronze assured, and an early rhythm established in Aichi-Nagoya.

The opening day has done its job — now the question is how far this start can be stretched over the weeks to come.
