Hampshire Cuts Ties with Scott Kuggeleijn Amid Fan Backlash

Hampshire have cut ties with New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn just a day after naming him in their 15-man squad for the County Championship clash against Warwickshire, following a fierce backlash from supporters.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that Kuggeleijn, who had been lined up for the final four Championship fixtures of the season, will no longer represent them.

“Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the Club,” the club said in a statement. “We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their views. Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign.”

The reversal came quickly. His initial inclusion for the Warwickshire match sparked immediate criticism on social media, with many fans pointing to Kuggeleijn’s past and questioning the club’s judgment.

Kuggeleijn was charged with rape in 2015 and faced two trials. The first, in 2016, ended with a hung jury. He was acquitted in a second trial in 2017. His legal acquittal did not quiet the debate around his presence in elite cricket.

The same storm surrounded him in 2023 when New Zealand awarded him a Test cap against England. Then, Black Caps head coach Gary Stead publicly backed the decision, with Kuggeleijn brought in as cover for the injured Kyle Jamieson. The seamer went on to play three Tests in total – the last in 2024 – along with two ODIs and 18 T20Is for his country.

Hampshire now head into the decisive stretch of their County Championship campaign with one overseas slot abruptly vacated and a fanbase that has made its stance unmistakably clear.
