Glamorgan Signs Wrexham-Born Seren Smale to Boost Women's Cricket
Glamorgan have brought one of their own back home, sealing the signing of Wrexham-born wicketkeeper-batter Seren Smale from Lancashire in a move that underlines the county’s growing ambition in the women’s game.
The 21-year-old, who has already broken into England’s T20 international side and shone at the 2022 ICC Women's U19 T20 World Cup, will join Glamorgan as they build towards Tier One status in 2027. It is a long-term play, and Smale sits right at the heart of it.
“Being Welsh and being able to represent Glamorgan professionally brings me so much excitement,” she said. “It's where I started my cricket journey and I can't wait to see what this next chapter brings.”
For Smale, that journey began at Buckley Cricket Club before she became a regular for Thunder between 2021 and 2024, gaining experience in regional cricket and The Hundred that now makes her one of the most accomplished young keepers in the domestic game. For Glamorgan, it is a statement that their best Welsh talent will no longer have to look elsewhere for a professional pathway.
A key signing for a new era
Inside the club, this deal has been a long time coming. Glamorgan's head of women and girls cricket, Aimee Rees, made no attempt to hide how central Smale was to their plans.
“We're absolutely delighted to have Seren join Glamorgan for the next three years. She is incredibly proud to be Welsh, and she was someone we identified early as a key target for our recruitment strategy,” Rees said.
That word – “strategy” – matters. Glamorgan are not just assembling a squad; they are building the spine of a professional women’s set-up designed to be ready for Tier One cricket by 2027. Smale, with international caps and big-stage exposure already on her CV, brings a level of polish that instantly raises standards.
Rees knows exactly what she is getting.
“She brings real quality and valuable experience to our squad, with experience in The Hundred and at international level. We know she will make a big impact, and we're excited to see her continue to develop and perform on the biggest stages in a Glamorgan shirt.”
Smale will link up with her new teammates later this year for pre-season, giving the coaching staff time to bed her into the group and build the combinations that will carry them into the 2027 campaign.
Building a professional core
Smale does not arrive in isolation. Her signing follows a flurry of business that has rapidly reshaped the women’s squad.
Batter Bethan Gammon, 25 and from Pontypridd, has already stepped into the professional ranks with Glamorgan, signing alongside all-rounder Bethan Ellis and batter-wicketkeeper Abbey Freeborn. Ellis and Freeborn are familiar faces, having spent the last two seasons on loan from Warwickshire, and now commit fully to the Welsh project.
They join captain Lauren Parfitt as Glamorgan's first full-time female players, a landmark moment that shifts the club from aspiration to reality in the women’s game.
One by one, the pieces are falling into place. A proud Welsh keeper back on home soil. A growing core of full-time professionals. A clear target on the horizon in 2027.
Glamorgan have drawn their line in the sand. Now the question is simple: how far can this new-look side go once the real battles begin?
