Why Gjivai Zechiel Could Be a Key Signing for Arsenal or Chelsea

Gjivai Zechiel’s impressive performances this season with Feyenoord have caught the attention of major Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea. The Dutch midfielder has been one of the standout players, prompting speculation about a possible move to England.

Early Career and Loan Spells

Zechiel joined Feyenoord’s first team at 19 in August 2023 after five years in their academy. His initial opportunities were limited, and by January 2025, he had only made 11 Eredivisie appearances. To gain experience, he was loaned out to Sparta Rotterdam, where he had spent his youth years. There, Zechiel played regularly, making 13 appearances and contributing to three goal involvements over four months.

This strong showing earned him a loan to Utrecht, a club that qualified for the Europa League after finishing fourth in the Eredivisie 2025-26 season. Under coach Ron Jans, Zechiel flourished, delivering 20 combined goals and assists in 50 appearances across competitions.

"In my eyes, he can grow into a top player," Jans told De Telegraaf. "He deserves a chance at Feyenoord."

Breakthrough at Feyenoord

After replacing Robin van Persie as Feyenoord manager in June, Giovanni van Bronckhorst gave Zechiel his opportunity, describing him as “the future for Dutch football.” Although there was interest from Lille in France, who offered up to €17 million, Feyenoord decided to keep him, seeing his value firsthand.

Van Bronckhorst recalled, "At first, his mind wasn’t fully with the club because he was focused on a transfer. But after seeing him train, I knew he had to stay at Feyenoord." Zechiel rewarded this faith by playing every minute of Feyenoord’s first nine Eredivisie matches of the season, scoring five goals and assisting four times.

Playing Style and Evolution

At Utrecht, Zechiel transformed from a midfield tempo-controller to a dynamic attacking force. Positioned as an advanced No.8, he found space between the lines and showed clinical finishing. His scoring streak included goals against Go Ahead Eagles, PSV, and Telstar, along with a brace for the Netherlands Under-21s in a European qualifier.

He admits his early career was marked by some challenges, including clashes with Van Persie during the 2023-24 season when Van Persie managed Feyenoord’s U19s. Zechiel described himself as a “troublemaker” back then but apologized and has since matured considerably.

Contract and Commitment

On September 17, Feyenoord extended Zechiel’s contract until 2029. Technical director Devy Rigaux praised his commitment: "He feels a great deal of loyalty to Feyenoord and is eager to succeed here." Zechiel echoed this sentiment, saying, "I am grateful for the trust placed in me. I belong here and want to keep improving."

International Debut and Recognition

New Dutch coach Xavi recently called Zechiel up to the senior national team after watching his performance in Feyenoord’s 5-0 win over Utrecht. Zechiel made his debut off the bench in a Nations League match against Greece, helping set up the equalizer.

Xavi said, "He’s a good player with potential and quality. He moves well without the ball and is technically skilled. I like him."

In a subsequent game versus Serbia, Zechiel excelled in midfield, completing 22 of 24 passes and helping the Netherlands secure a 2-1 victory. Xavi remarked, "Zechiel played a great game. He can become really important for the team. He has the personality."

Premier League Potential

Zechiel’s blend of creativity, efficiency, and goal threat makes him a perfect fit for the Premier League style. At Arsenal, manager Mikel Arteta appreciates midfielders who combine technical skill with the ability to hold possession under pressure, qualities Zechiel possesses. He could complement stars like Martin Odegaard, Bruno Guimaraes, and Declan Rice.

For Chelsea, Zechiel would provide support alongside Moises Caicedo, supplying quick passes to attackers such as Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers. His clever runs forward add a new dimension to their attack.

The main concern is his physicality. Zechiel reads the game well but sometimes struggles in duels and tackling. To thrive in England, he will need to bulk up and adapt to the demanding nature of the league. He looks up to experienced Dutch teammates like Denzel Dumfries and Virgil van Dijk for guidance on leadership and resilience.

Outlook

With ambition and humility, Zechiel is poised to become a valuable asset for any top club. If his progress continues, a competitive bidding war might emerge by 2027. For now, he remains focused on helping Feyenoord and developing his game further.
