Finn Allen Secures Record BBL Deal with Melbourne Stars

The Big Bash League has a new financial benchmark, and it belongs to Finn Allen.

The Black Caps opener has reportedly become the most expensive player in the history of Australian T20 cricket, signing a three-year deal with the Melbourne Stars worth a reported NZ$740,000 after switching from the Perth Scorchers.

For a club still chasing its first BBL title, this is a statement. A loud one.

Allen, 27, joins a dressing room already built around Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, turning the Stars’ top order into one of the most intimidating in the competition. If they were already box office, this pushes them towards must-watch territory.

“The Stars are a powerhouse team in this competition, so it's going to be a lot of fun playing for them,” Allen said in a statement, clearly relishing the move. The pull of the MCG sealed it.

“They've already got a huge fanbase and they're only getting bigger, and I can't wait to be a part of that. I think all cricketers love playing at the MCG, so to be able to call that my home ground now is really exciting.”

He arrives in Melbourne at the peak of his powers.

In the 2025/26 season, Allen was the BBL’s leading run-scorer with 466 runs and a record 38 sixes, numbers that didn’t just top the charts but reshaped how attacks approached him. Bowlers knew what was coming. They still couldn’t stop it. Those 38 blows over the rope turned him into one of the most feared top-order batters in the league.

That domestic form spilled straight into the international arena. Allen hammered a record-breaking century against South Africa, a brutal innings that helped propel the Black Caps into the Twenty20 World Cup final in India. The stage got bigger; his game kept pace.

The Stars are betting that version of Allen walks through the MCG gates this summer.

They are not the only Australian side shopping in New Zealand, either. Across the Tasman, Allen’s countrymen are also on the move. Tim Seifert has secured a one-year switch from the Melbourne Renegades to the Sydney Sixers, adding another layer of experience and explosiveness to a club with a rich BBL pedigree. Mark Chapman is expected to link up with the Adelaide Strikers, another savvy pickup in a market that is increasingly turning to New Zealand for ready-made T20 performers.

Money, talent, and expectation have all converged on Finn Allen now. The Stars have paid for a game-changer. The MCG lights will tell whether they’ve just bought the piece that finally delivers a maiden BBL championship.
