Delhi T20I India vs Afghanistan Confirmed Amid BRICS Security Concerns
For a few tense hours, New Delhi wasn’t sure if it would be hosting cricket or just convoys.
The first T20 International between India and Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium briefly slipped into doubt, caught in the security dragnet around the BRICS Summit in the Capital. With heads of state set to converge on the city, Delhi Police raised concerns and explored the possibility of pushing the game back by a day.
The prospect was real enough to trigger serious discussions. A global summit, multiple high-security zones, and a packed international fixture list rarely coexist comfortably.
But the DDCA held its line — and now has its clearance.
Late on Thursday evening, the Delhi District Cricket Association confirmed that the match will go ahead as planned on Sunday, 13 September. No postponement. No reshuffle.
“India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled. Following a meeting with Delhi Traffic Police, DDCA has been assured of all necessary support and arrangements,” the association announced via social media.
The key meeting with Delhi Traffic Police appears to have settled the issue, with authorities assuring the board that security and logistical support will be in place despite the summit’s demands. That means crowd management, team movements, and stadium access all stay on their original grid.
So the Capital braces for a double act on Sunday: motorcades and metal detectors on one side of town, white-ball fireworks on the other.
