Black Caps Announce Pace-Heavy Squad for India T20s

New Zealand have named a near full-strength, pace-heavy squad to face India at home, with Adam Milne and Michael Bracewell both handed comebacks and Finn Allen and Tim Seifert locked in at the top of the order.

Head coach Rob Walter has 16 players at his disposal for the marquee T20 series against the reigning world champions, and he plans to use every one of them.

Allen–Seifert axis set at the top

Finn Allen will again be asked to light the fuse at the top, joined by Tim Seifert, whose stock continues to rise after a standout northern summer. Seifert was named player of the tournament as he steered Manchester Super Giants to the title in England’s “The Hundred”, form that has helped secure him a Big Bash deal with the Sydney Sixers and now a central role back in black.

With Devon Conway, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell forming the core of the middle order, New Zealand’s batting group carries both power and experience. Michael Bracewell’s return adds another layer: a genuine allround option who can float with the bat and tighten the screws with his off-spin.

Milne headlines deep fast-bowling group

The most striking feature of the squad sits with the quicks. Milne, 34, is back after the frustration of missing the World Cup through injury, having originally been named in the initial 15-man group. His recall swells a fast-bowling unit that runs seven deep.

Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy are joined by Zak Foulkes and Nathan Smith, two seamers rewarded after missing out on World Cup selection. The message is clear: New Zealand intend to challenge India with relentless pace options, tailored to home conditions and backed by rotation.

In that context, the absence of Jimmy Neesham and Ish Sodhi from the World Cup contingent is notable. Both miss out, while Ben Sears remains sidelined as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

Bracewell back, Ravindra out, Jacobs steps in

Bracewell’s inclusion is one of the more significant selection calls. Forced out of the World Cup squad by injury, he now returns to reclaim his place as a key allrounder. His comeback leaves no space for Cole McConchie, the off-spinning allrounder who impressed as an injury replacement in India and Sri Lanka but now finds himself squeezed out.

New Zealand will, however, have to do without one of their breakout stars. Rachin Ravindra, who has become a central figure across formats, has not been named after suffering a freak shoulder injury while on commercial duty last week. The hope is he will be fit in time for the five-match one-day international series starting at the beginning of November.

His slot in the T20 squad goes to Bevon Jacobs, one of three players overlooked for the World Cup who now get an opening against elite opposition.

Walter targets wins – and manages the load

Walter made no attempt to play down the scale of the assignment or the excitement around it.

“India is a quality team and a challenging opposition, so to take them on in our own conditions in front of Kiwi fans is really exciting,” he said. He expects packed houses throughout: “We hear most of the games are going to be sold out and it should make for some incredible occasions.”

The intent is sharp. “We’ve got a near full-strength squad that covers all bases and I’m excited to see how we compete against the current T20 world champions.

“Our priority is winning games and putting the best team on the park, but we also have to keep in mind the volume of cricket in the coming months. We’re very fortunate with the depth that we’ve got to call upon, so we’ll look to use all 16 squad members throughout the series as we manage workloads.”

So New Zealand go after India with pace in reserve, power at the top, and a coach willing to shuffle his deck. How this blend stands up to the world champions, under lights and in front of sold-out Kiwi crowds, will say plenty about where the Black Caps’ white-ball era goes next.
