Barcelona and Lamine Yamal Face PSG in Champions League Test of Their Strength

The Barcelona squad, featuring the rising star Lamine Yamal, are riding an impressive streak ahead of their upcoming Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. The question remains: will their unbeaten run survive the challenge at Parc des Princes?

Last Season's Reminder: PSG's Edge Over Barca

Just over a year ago, before PSG visited, Pedri boldly declared Barcelona as the best team globally, with Yamal expressing their ambition to win the Champions League. Yet, in that very match at Montjuic, PSG overturned expectations by defeating Barcelona 2-1, courtesy of a late goal by Goncalo Ramos. Despite missing several key players, including their top forwards, PSG's victory was a clear demonstration of their quality.

"If you're the best, you have to show it on the pitch, not talk," Ramos said, underscoring PSG’s confidence as reigning European champions.

Barca’s coach Hansi Flick admitted after the loss that they weren’t yet at PSG’s level. Now, with Barcelona dominating their season, the rematch sets a new bar for them to prove those words wrong.

Barca’s Season So Far and Defensive Woes

The defeat didn’t stop Barcelona from winning La Liga by eight points, sealing the title with a victory over Real Madrid on May 10. But Flick was frustrated by how his side lost focus late in games, especially in defense. He stressed the need for better structure and teamwork throughout the full 90 minutes, emphasizing both attacking and defensive responsibilities.

Despite their attacking prowess, Barcelona’s defensive vulnerabilities remained. They exited the Champions League quarter-finals last season after a 3-2 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid, failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their 12 European games. This raises questions about whether the new season will bring improvements, particularly after transfer moves aimed at strengthening the squad.

Offensive Firepower and Key Transfers

Barcelona’s attack looks sharper than ever, averaging 4.4 goals per game across all competitions so far. While they couldn’t secure striker Julian Alvarez, the addition of Raphinha has filled the gap left by Robert Lewandowski impressively. Gabriel Jesus appears to offer more impact off the bench than Ferran Torres, who moved to PSG.

  • Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi compete for attacking positions alongside the guaranteed starters Yamal and Raphinha.
  • This depth means head coach Flick can rely on several potential game-changers even when making substitutions.

Despite this attacking strength, defensive doubts linger. Barcelona have yet to keep a Champions League clean sheet since April 2025.

Strengthening the Midfield and Defense

Signing Rodri, regarded as the world's best defensive midfielder, was a significant boost. His ability to maintain possession and shield the defense addresses one of Barcelona’s biggest weaknesses exposed in last season’s defeat to PSG.

Flick acknowledged how midfield battles were lost against PSG, with key players Pedri and Frenkie de Jong struggling to keep up. With Rodri now in the squad, Barcelona should be better equipped to control possession and reduce pressure on the back line.

The defense still seems fragile. New signing Joao Cancelo provides valuable cover at full-back, which is critical given absences like Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia for the Paris match. Still, Barcelona appear vulnerable if Pau Cubarsi, their goalkeeper, gets injured.

The Challenge Ahead

Barcelona heads to Paris confident but aware of the challenge. Notably, Nuno Mendes, one of the few defenders to contain Yamal successfully, is sidelined with a thigh injury, offering the teenager a chance to make an impact.

Yamal openly claims he deserves to win the Ballon d’Or but admits a Champions League winner’s medal is missing from his resume.

Luis Enrique remarked, "The new format means many league phase games won’t decide the trophy; the real competition starts in April." Still, this match feels significant for Barcelona and Yamal to show they can match PSG’s level this season.

If last season taught anything, it’s that performance matters more than promises. Barcelona will aim to back up their current form with results on Tuesday.
