Bangladesh Rest Taskin Ahmed for Afghanistan Test

Bangladesh have chosen prudence over firepower, resting pace spearhead Taskin Ahmed for their one-off Test against Afghanistan in the UAE, a move that underlines how sharply the World Test Championship now shapes their planning.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board named a 15-man squad for the match, to be played from October 9 to 13, with Najmul Hossain Shanto leading a group that blends familiar names with two timely recalls.

Taskin Protected for West Indies Push

Taskin’s omission is not a demotion. It is a calculation.

"We have decided to give rest to Taskin from this Test match. As we are prioritizing the Test Championship so we are looking forward to getting his full service during the Test series against West Indies," BCB chief selector Habibul Bashar said, laying bare the strategy.

The message is clear: Afghanistan in a neutral venue is important, but the four home Tests to come in this WTC cycle — against West Indies and England — are the real prize. Taskin, central to Bangladesh’s pace attack, is being kept fresh for those heavier, more draining assignments.

"He might play the ODI series against West Indies to get his rhythm as he is already playing Test matches," Bashar added, hinting at a careful workload plan rather than any concern over form or fitness.

Hridoy Rewarded After Monumental 350

If Taskin’s absence is about preservation, Towhid Hridoy’s inclusion is about reward.

Hridoy forced his way into the Test squad with sheer weight of runs, his unbeaten 350 against South Africa A in Potchefstroom still echoing around selection meetings. That innings, a statement of stamina and temperament as much as strokeplay, has now translated into a place in the longest format.

For a batting group that has often leaned on the experience of Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque and Litton Kumer Das, Hridoy brings fresh energy and recent, towering form. It is the kind of selection that hints at a gradual transition, not a jolt.

Jaker Back as Amite Misses Out

Behind the stumps, there is another change. Wicketkeeper-batter Amite Hasan has been left out, with Jaker Ali Anik recalled.

"We have replaced Amite Hasan with Jaker Ali taking his form into consideration," Bashar said. That form includes a composed 94 against South Africa A in the same Potchefstroom match where Hridoy stole the headlines.

Jaker’s route back has been winding. He was initially drafted into the Test squad for the series against Australia when Litton Das looked doubtful, only to step aside once Litton recovered in time for the tour Down Under. His last Test appearance came in July 2025 in Galle against Sri Lanka. Now, with runs behind him and another opening in the squad, he gets his second chance.

With Mushfiqur, Litton and Jaker all in the group, Bangladesh have flexibility in how they balance middle-order runs with wicketkeeping duties, especially in UAE conditions where spin and patience often define the contest.

Rana Held Back for the Heavy Lifting

The selectors have also kept a close watch on the fast-bowling stocks beyond Taskin. Nahid Rana, sidelined since July with a Grade 2 side strain, remains in rehabilitation but is edging closer to a return.

"Rana will be available from October 10. We have four important WTC matches at home ahead of us, so we want to keep him ready for the two-match Test series against the West Indies and England," Bashar said.

That timing means Rana will not feature against Afghanistan but could be unleashed when Bangladesh return home to more demanding, higher-stakes series. It is another sign that the Afghanistan Test, while significant, is being used as a bridge to a defining home stretch.

Shanto’s Side Takes Shape

The squad around Shanto has a familiar spine. Tanzid Hasan and Shadman Islam offer options at the top, with Soumya Sarkar adding versatility. Mominul Haque, still the most accomplished Test specialist in the group, anchors the middle order alongside Mushfiqur and Litton, with Hridoy and Jaker pressing for roles.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam provide Bangladesh’s trusted spin tandem, a combination that has carried the side through many home Tests and should relish the conditions in the UAE. The pace unit, without Taskin and Rana, leans on Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury and Shoriful Islam.

It is a squad built to compete now, but clearly calibrated with an eye on what comes next.

Bangladesh Test squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain), Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque Showrab, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Kumer Das, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali Anik, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, Shoriful Islam.

Afghanistan in the UAE will offer a sharp, one-match examination. The real question is whether these careful, calculated calls on Taskin, Rana, Hridoy and Jaker will leave Bangladesh better armed when the West Indies and England come calling in the heart of their WTC campaign.
