Auqib Nabi Joins Surrey for County Championship Challenge

Auqib Nabi’s red‑hot rise continues. Fresh from a season that turned him from domestic workhorse into one of India’s most talked‑about quicks, the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler has landed his first county deal with Surrey.

The club confirmed that Nabi has signed a short-term contract and will be available for their next three County Championship fixtures, against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan. It’s a brief window, but a significant one: three games to make an impression in the grind of English red-ball cricket.

Surrey turn to fresh firepower

Surrey’s schedule has been unforgiving. Six Championship matches in six weeks, with barely any breathing space and international call-ups biting into the squad, have left their seam resources stretched.

“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run in,” Alec Stewart, Director of Men’s Cricket, said. “We look forward to welcoming Auqib to the group this week.”

That “run in” could be decisive, and Stewart has opted for a bowler arriving in England at full tilt rather than on reputation alone.

From Ranji revelation to county stage

Nabi is not an overnight story; he’s a fast bowler who has forced doors open. Over the last few months he has ridden a remarkable purple patch, spearheading Jammu and Kashmir to their maiden Ranji Trophy title. He didn’t just contribute, he dominated – 60 wickets in the campaign, enough to be named player of the tournament and to put his name firmly on every selector’s list.

That haul shifted his career onto a new track. Delhi Capitals rewarded his domestic form with a bumper IPL contract for the 2026 season, where he featured in five games and tasted the pressure cooker of franchise cricket. The step up to India A followed, then a call into the senior Test squad in Sri Lanka as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement. He did not debut, but the message was clear: he is now in the conversation.

Now comes the county chapter.

A new challenge in England

For fast bowlers, England in late-season Championship cricket can be both a dream and a test. Conditions can help, but only if you adapt quickly to different pitches, balls and rhythms. Nabi will have little time to settle; three matches, different opponents, and a Surrey dressing room that expects to compete for titles.
