Asian Games Cricket Controversy: India and Pakistan Reach Semifinals Without Playing

The men’s cricket quarterfinals at the Asian Games faced a major setback when persistent rain and soggy outfields prevented any play in Nisshin on Monday morning. Both India and Pakistan moved directly into the semifinals without bowling a single ball.

Pakistan benefited first as their quarterfinal match against Hong Kong was abandoned due to rain. Their higher T20I ranking sealed their passage. Shortly after, India received the same fate when their clash with Afghanistan was cancelled just 16 minutes before the toss, again because of bad weather and poor ground conditions. Since India ranks above Afghanistan according to ICC T20I rankings from July 23, 2026, they progressed to the next round.

Player Reactions and Frustrations

Afghanistan's Mohammad Akram Zazai expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing that his team arrived prepared to compete and had experience playing twice on the same ground.

"We are here for the match but unfortunately it rained," Zazai said. "The rain started yesterday, so hard luck for us. We would have been happy to play here with India - our players are in form."
"We already played two matches here on this ground, so we know the condition very well. But unfortunately the rain has ruined everything," he added. "We saw the rain on our mobile phones this morning. Everyone was sad."
"We would be happy if five or six overs were played instead of abandoning the match. Our team is good even in the short format. We just wanted to play so there was a chance."

Criticism of Organizers’ Ground Management

Fans took to social media to voice anger over the event’s poor preparation. Many blamed the organisers for lacking equipment and planning to handle wet conditions.

  • @Ajmalzadran18: "Absolute incompetence by the Asian Games organizers! They don’t even have proper equipment to dry the outfield in 2026. Because of their poor ground management, the match was abandoned and Afghan Abdalyan is out. Why host such big events when you can’t even manage a wet field?"
  • @Crictologist: "So Afghanistan and Hong Kong both got knocked out without even playing the quarterfinals. Shame!! I thought the pitch was good enough for a good game but rain ruined it all."
  • @Rajiv1841: "India vs Afghanistan QF is abandoned due to rain. They abandoned the game even 40 minutes before its scheduled start. This has to be some joke!"
  • @Amitsinha4444: "Non-cricket country hosting with no idea how to prepare cricket matches. Remember the outfield in India vs Japan game? Worse than an international test match."
  • @doc_hormone: "What’s happening in Asian Games cricket? All matches abandoned."

Preparation Could Have Made a Difference

While weather is beyond control, many argue that better preparation could have reduced the impact. Nagoya’s forecast predicted rain for days. The organisers had time to bring covers, drying machines, or super soakers, yet failed to do so.

A semifinal reached without a ball bowled leaves everyone feeling shortchanged. Cricket at the Asian Games deserves improved planning or its future there will remain uncertain.
