Abishek Porel Granted Bail After 36 Days in Custody
Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been released on bail by a Chinsurah court after spending more than a month in judicial custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case.
The order, reported by ABP Ananda and corroborated by multiple outlets, comes 36 days after Porel was arrested on August 11, following a complaint lodged by a medical student from Karnataka.
Allegations and legal trail
According to the complaint, filed at Mogra police station on June 23, the woman alleged she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that the two had discussed marriage. She claimed they had travelled abroad together during this period, but said Porel later denied the relationship, which led her to approach the police.
She also referred to an earlier dispute between them about one-and-a-half years ago that, by her account, had required police intervention. No formal complaint was filed at that time.
Police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the BNS, and Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. The case then moved to the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel and ordered the seizure of his electronic devices over concerns about possible dissemination of photographs of the complainant.
The proceedings include allegations of rape, criminal intimidation and other offences. Porel has previously denied the allegations.
After his arrest, he was produced before the Chinsurah court, where his initial bail plea was rejected and he was sent to judicial custody. The same court has now granted him bail, allowing his release after 36 days in jail.
Rising career under a cloud
The 23-year-old’s legal battle comes at a time when his cricket career appeared to be on a steady upward curve.
Porel, a wicketkeeper-batter, joined Delhi Capitals in 2023 and made his IPL debut that season. He went on to score 108 runs in four innings for the franchise in the 2026 campaign, hinting at a growing role in their batting plans.
Across his T20 career, he has featured in 35 games, scoring 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of 145.37, with four half-centuries to his name — numbers that mark him out as a powerful presence in the middle order.
In domestic cricket, Porel broke into the Bengal first-class side in the 2021-22 season and has since become a regular. He has represented Bengal in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games, embedding himself in the state’s core group at a relatively young age.
For now, the focus shifts from runs and dismissals to court dates and legal scrutiny. How this case unfolds could shape not just the next phase of his career, but his place in Indian cricket’s wider conversation.
