WTA Sets Equal Prize Money for All Events in 2027

For the first time ever, every tournament under the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) banner will offer equal prize money to women and men. Announced alongside the 2027 season schedule, this marks a historic moment for the WTA, which has been pushing toward this goal since its inception in 1973.

The 2027 calendar includes 55 events taking place in 26 countries and territories. Each of these tournaments will award equal prize money, confirming the WTA’s commitment to fairness and equality across the sport.

Milestone for Women’s Sport and Tennis

The upcoming season also highlights a breakthrough for women’s sports as all combined WTA 1000 tournaments will provide equal pay, something the association has aimed for over five decades. This achievement honors the legacy of pioneers like Billie Jean King, who helped establish the WTA in 1973 and championed equality in tennis.

Notable Events Committed to Equality

The WTA release named several key tournaments that have firmly pledged equal prize money. These include:

  • Italian Open
  • National Bank Open presented by Rogers
  • Cincinnati Open
  • BNP Paribas Open
  • Miami Open
  • All four Grand Slam events

These join a growing list of events that have already implemented equal payouts for men and women.

Leadership and Player Support

"The WTA is stepping up to deliver more for players and tournaments in 2027. We have listened to player feedback on the demands of the calendar, and responded with a meaningful reduction in commitments. Achieving equal prize money across all combined WTA 1000 tournaments is a major milestone for tennis. It demonstrates the WTA’s continued commitment to leading the sports industry in delivering our athletes competitive and financial equality, and is a testament to the enduring nature of the founding vision of the WTA." — WTA Chair Valerie Camillo

While some tournaments had promised equal prize money in the past but fell short, such as the Italian Open, the 2027 season will ensure those promises are fulfilled.
