Virginia's Shannon Lam Shines at Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia didn’t ease into its fall season. It arrived in Chapel Hill and started throwing punches.

At the Kitty Harrison Invitational, staged Friday through Sunday at the Chewning Tennis Center, first-year standout Shannon Lam wasted no time announcing herself. Slotted into an eight-player singles flight, she ripped through three straight matches to claim the title, turning her collegiate debut into a statement weekend.

Lam’s perfect run set the tone for the Cavaliers. Behind her, a wave of steady results followed. Katie Rolls, Alyssa James and Blanca Pico Navarro each pieced together two wins, grinding their way into the finals of their respective singles flights. Different courts, different opponents, same storyline: Virginia jerseys deep in every draw.

For a program using September to lay the foundation for May, this was exactly the kind of opening act it wanted. Competitive, sharp, and already pushing into the business end of brackets.

Looking Ahead

Now the stage gets bigger.

Next stop: Cary, N.C., and the ITA All-American Championships, running Sept. 19-27. It’s the first major gateway to the NCAA Individual Championships, the kind of event where early-season form can turn into something far more significant.

Virginia heads there with momentum, a fearless freshman already holding a title, and several teammates who have just played themselves into contention. The fall has only just begun, but the Cavaliers have made their intentions clear.
