Vincent Kompany Collapses at Bayern Training: Health Concerns Rise
Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching Bayern Munich’s second team train on Friday, casting a worrying shadow over the club’s preparations for the weekend.
The 40-year-old, who has been suffering with a virus this week, was observing the session for Bayern’s amateurs when he suddenly went down and required immediate medical attention. The club confirmed he was taken to hospital and will remain under medical supervision while doctors carry out detailed checks.
It marks a sharp and unsettling turn from midweek. Kompany had been too unwell to attend Tuesday’s pre-match news conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League tie against Arsenal, but he still made it to the touchline on Wednesday night to lead the team.
By Friday, his condition had clearly deteriorated.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs,” read a Bayern statement. “The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
Inside the club, the message is clear: football can wait.
“Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” said sporting director Max Eberl. “Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
Assistant coach Aaron Danks, who had already fronted the media before the Arsenal game in Kompany’s absence, is again expected to carry the public-facing duties as Bayern turn towards Sunday’s Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg.
The match now sits in the shadow of a far more pressing concern: the wellbeing of the man brought in to lead a new era in Munich.
