Vincent Kompany Collapses at Bayern Training Ground

Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground while observing a session for the club’s amateur side.

Bayern confirmed the incident in a statement, stressing that their head coach is under medical supervision and in stable condition.

“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs,” the club said. “The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”

The 38-year-old has been battling a viral infection in recent days. It had already disrupted his usual match preparations: he missed Bayern’s pre-match press conference ahead of the midweek Champions League tie against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.

He still made it to the touchline on Wednesday night, taking his place in the dugout for Bayern’s intense 2-2 draw with the Premier League side. The performance underlined the physical and emotional demands of a season that has rarely allowed him to breathe.

Now his staff step in. Training and match duties fall to his assistants while doctors run a full check-up and monitor his recovery.

Bayern return to Bundesliga action on Sunday against Freiburg. The club will wait to see whether their head coach is well enough to lead them again or whether this scare forces a short, and perhaps much-needed, spell of rest.
