Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Munich Training
Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, casting a shadow over the club’s preparations for the weekend.
The Bayern head coach had been battling a virus for several days, visibly struggling on the touchline during last weekend’s win over RB Leipzig. He was in clear discomfort, moving gingerly along the technical area, but chose to continue in the dugout.
By midweek, after the Champions League draw with Arsenal, Kompany insisted he was recovering and on the way back to full health. The message was one of reassurance. The reality proved very different.
On Friday, as Bayern’s reserve team trained ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg, Kompany watched on from the side. During the session, he collapsed, prompting immediate medical attention and an urgent trip to hospital.
Bayern confirmed the incident in a statement, stressing that their coach is undergoing detailed checks and will stay under observation.
“Vincent Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations,” the club announced.
The responsibility for the squad now falls to his assistants while doctors monitor his condition. Results on the pitch, for the moment, are secondary.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined that point, making it clear the club’s focus has shifted firmly to Kompany’s wellbeing.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” Eberl said. “Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”
Messages quickly arrived from beyond Bavaria. Manchester City, where Kompany is revered as one of the club’s greatest captains, sent a public show of support.
“Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and Club legend, Vincent Kompany. Get well soon, Vinny,” read a post on the club’s official X feed.
For Bayern, the Freiburg fixture now sits in the background. The immediate concern is a coach who has built a career on resilience suddenly needing time away from the front line. How long he will be absent remains to be seen, but the response from Munich and Manchester alike leaves no doubt: the game can wait.
