Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Munich Training Session

Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session at Bayern Munich’s Säbener Straße complex on Friday and is undergoing hospital tests, the club have confirmed.

The Bayern head coach was watching the FC Bayern Amateure session when he suddenly went down, prompting immediate medical intervention on the pitch. The club later wrote on X that Kompany was “under medical care” and would remain so while doctors carry out a “thorough examination in hospital.”

A helicopter landed at the training ground as emergency services responded, underlining the seriousness of the moment, but it was ultimately not required for transport. German outlets Bild and Sky reported that Kompany was taken to a Munich hospital accompanied by an emergency doctor.

For now, Bayern have handed day-to-day control to his staff. “Until further notice, his coaching staff will oversee training and matches,” the club’s statement said.

“Vincent Kompany's health is our highest priority. We at Bayern Munich will do everything we can to help him recover quickly,” he said, stressing that the Belgian will receive “all the medical care and support he needs, and all the time he needs. His coaching staff, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at Bayern Munich wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

The incident comes at the end of a draining spell for Kompany. He has been battling a viral infection in recent days, one that already disrupted Bayern’s preparations for their Champions League clash with Arsenal, a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.

Too unwell to take the final training session before that match or attend the pre-game press conference, Kompany watched as assistant Aaron Danks stepped in front of the cameras. Danks underlined the need for caution at the time, saying “It is very important that he rests” and revealing that Kompany had “felt pain in his legs.”

Even so, Kompany pushed himself back onto the touchline for the game itself. After the draw with Arsenal, he laid out the toll that decision – and his general refusal to ease off – had taken.

“As a coach, you always want to do everything. I caught a pretty nasty virus last week and, of course, I didn't listen to my body. Then, at some point, my body said: ‘Stop now!’”

On Friday, that warning from his body appeared to arrive in brutal, public fashion.

Bayern, a club built on control and certainty, must now deal with an altogether different kind of pressure: managing a season’s ambitions while their head coach lies in a hospital bed, and waiting for doctors to decide when – and in what condition – Vincent Kompany can return to the dugout.
