Tommy Coyle Set for Ring Return to Support Boxing Clubs

Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Tommy Coyle is stepping back into the ring after more than five years away from professional boxing. The Hull native plans to fight once again against his old rival Derry Mathews, aiming to raise funds for boxing clubs in Hull and Liverpool.

A Fight with a Cause

The 37-year-old boxer expressed mixed emotions about his comeback. "The response has been incredible," he said. "It’s humbling and I’m excited, but I’m a little nervous too." Their match is scheduled for December 11, though the venue in Hull remains unconfirmed.

Past Battles and New Memories

Coyle and Mathews first met in the ring at Craven Park, Hull, in 2013 during a bout for the Commonwealth title, where Mathews won in the tenth round. Reflecting on that fight, Coyle shared, "Who knows what’s going to happen? In round 10, I got knocked out, so let’s just see if I can turn back the clock. We’re two old pros who are friends, and we’re going to go at it and try to create some memories."

Personal Motivation

This comeback holds special meaning for Coyle as he continues to cope with the loss of his father, Chris, who passed away in 2022 and had played a significant role in his career. "It will be the first fight my dad hasn’t seen," Coyle said. "It’s sad, but I can’t stop doing things just because he’s no longer here. He isn’t coming back and I’ve had to come to terms with that. I really struggled with him not being around; he was my best friend."

He added, "For the next 12 weeks, this will give me something to focus on, something to chase, something to occupy my mind. If I say I’m doing something, I always do it."

Fans and Clubs Benefit

Coyle noted that the fans and the boxing clubs will be the real winners from this fight. The proceeds will support local clubs, helping sustain the sport in both cities.
