Summer 2026 Transfer Window: Manchester United and Tottenham Struggle Amid Premier League Spending Frenzy
The summer of 2026 saw Premier League clubs keep the cash flowing, splashing out heavily on new signings. Yet, despite the big spending, some top teams have struggled to find early-season success with their fresh recruits.
Top Signings and Early Performances
Manchester United finally kicked off their long-awaited midfield overhaul this summer, but the results so far have been disappointing. Youri Tielemans, arriving from Aston Villa, has not met expectations. Carlos Baleba has yet to feature due to an ankle injury, delaying his impact. Another addition, Brazilian Andrey Santos from Chelsea, was brought in as a future replacement for Casemiro but has shown poor form. The 22-year-old started in defeats to Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion and has logged only 42 minutes across other appearances combined. While there's still time for their midfield to gel, United needs progress quickly after a shaky start.
Tottenham Hotspur face even tougher challenges, sitting at the bottom of the table after five games with two draws and three losses. They spent over €200 million on midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, raising hopes they could challenge for a top-four spot. Manager Roberto De Zerbi, however, has yet to get the best from the pair, who must improve considerably soon. Jan Paul van Hecke, another signing, has struggled defensively, casting doubt on Tottenham's decision to trade Luka Vuskovic for him.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Smart Moves Highlight Spurs' Missteps
Brighton capitalized on Tottenham’s questionable decisions by signing Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic, who never played for Spurs’ first team but impressed during a loan spell at Hamburg. The 19-year-old has become a regular starter for Brighton, helping them rise to third place. His adaptability across systems makes him a savvy pickup for a club known for smart transfers.
Brentford also continue their knack for spotting talent they can develop and sell for profit. Mali international Mamadou Sangare joined from Ligue 1 side Lens and has impressed with his energetic displays. His performance on the opening weekend left Tottenham’s revamped midfield trailing behind, and he has kept up that form since. Looking at this, one might argue that Manchester United missed an opportunity by passing on Sangare.
Other Notable Summer Signings
- James Trafford (Leeds United): Conceded just three goals in five league matches, strengthening Leeds’ defense.
- Jeremy Jacquet (Liverpool): Brought much-needed stability to Liverpool’s back line following a difficult previous season.
