Sandro Tonali’s Agent Reveals Midfielder’s Sadness After Unexpected AC Milan Exit and Transfer Details
Beppe Riso, agent of Sandro Tonali, has opened up about the midfielder’s difficult transition following his surprising departure from AC Milan to Newcastle United. The move, which stunned Serie A fans, saw Tonali face emotional challenges during his early days in the Premier League before eventually securing a big transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
Challenges Adapting to Life in England
Tonali, who grew up supporting AC Milan and was a key figure in their Serie A title triumph, struggled after moving to Newcastle. When the Magpies paid €67 million for him in the summer of 2023, he hesitated to accept. According to Riso, those first weeks were marked by deep sadness as Tonali adjusted to his new environment.
Why Tonali Left Milan
Riso explained that the choice to leave Italy came from sensing a change in Milan’s atmosphere. The agent felt the club was drifting away from its historic identity, pushing them to explore other options. He said on the Colpi da Maestro podcast, "We made the first step because we realised that Milan were becoming different. I know Milan well, and this was not giving the same sensations as that historic club. Talking to Sandro, we considered that going to the Premier League was a fascinating challenge. He had courage to go, because he was one of the most important players in the Scudetto-winning side, but he was a visionary."
Overcoming Initial Difficulties at Newcastle
Tonali has never been quick to settle in new places. Even at Milan, it took him time to shine after joining from Brescia. At Newcastle, despite his sadness early on, he eventually found his rhythm and proved his quality on the pitch. Riso commented, "It was very difficult for him, in the first few weeks he was sad, but he got a handle on things and made his mark, as always."
Record-Breaking Move to Tottenham
Tonali’s progress at Newcastle opened the door for a huge transfer. Three years later, Tottenham Hotspur signed him for an eye-watering €108 million. Riso admitted the pressure surrounding such a high-profile switch was immense. He said, "It was a crazy move for the numbers, but also for the responsibility." Despite the challenges, the agent believes Tonali is now exactly where he belongs, having fully embraced life and football in England.
