Players Who Defeated Rafael Nadal at the Shanghai Masters as He Never Claimed the Title
Rafael Nadal never managed to win the Shanghai Masters during his tennis career. Retiring in 2024, Nadal is celebrated as one of the all-time greats with 22 Grand Slam trophies to his name.
Alongside his major wins, Nadal earned 36 Masters 1000 titles, a tally only surpassed by Novak Djokovic. He conquered seven of the nine current ATP 1000 tournaments, with Shanghai Masters among the two he never captured.
Nadal's Shanghai Masters Journey
Over eight appearances at Shanghai, Nadal came close but fell short each time. His best run was in the tournament’s first edition, where he reached the final only to be upset by Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(3), 6-3.
After finishing runner-up in 2009, Nadal faced early defeats in 2010 and 2011, losing to Jurgen Melzer and Florian Mayer respectively. A knee injury kept him out in 2012.
He returned in 2013, making it to the semifinals before losing to Juan Martin del Potro. The following year saw a second-round exit against Feliciano Lopez.
Nadal reached the semifinals again in 2015 but then lost early in 2016 to Viktor Troicki. His last Shanghai appearance was in 2017, reaching the final again but falling to Roger Federer 6-4, 6-3.
This made Nadal the first player to lose multiple Shanghai finals without ever winning the title.

Nadal on Missing Out at Shanghai
When asked after the 2017 final if not having won Shanghai motivated him more, Nadal replied, "No. No, no, I just play every tournament with as high motivation as possible. Would not be fair I play here with higher motivation than in Monte-Carlo because I didn’t win here and I won in Monte-Carlo 10 times. No, every time I go on court I try my best. I try to play as good as I can. Sometimes I play better; sometimes I play worse. That’s all. Shanghai is an important event. I always put attention in this event. Is true that I was not able to play as good as I would like here that often, but I already play two finals, couple of semi-finals. So was not a bad event."
Nadal missed the 2018 Shanghai Masters due to a right knee injury and skipped 2019 with a left wrist problem. The tournament then disappeared from the calendar until 2023, by which point Nadal was playing a limited schedule late in his career.
