Piero Hincapie Returns Early to Boost Arsenal Ahead of Everton Clash
Piero Hincapie has handed Arsenal an unexpected boost on the eve of their Premier League meeting with Everton, stepping back into full training weeks earlier than first feared.
The Ecuador defender joined the main group at London Colney ahead of Saturday’s clash, a sharp change in tone from the concern that followed his bizarre setback earlier this month. He had only just re-entered the fray for Arsenal, coming on as a late substitute in the 2-1 win over Leeds, when a freak injury in a post-match warm-down halted his momentum almost as soon as it started.
That mishap kept him out of the win over Nottingham Forest and restricted him to individual work on the grass in the build-up to the Champions League trip to Bayern Munich. At that stage, Mikel Arteta was braced for a longer absence.
Arteta had warned that the 24-year-old could be out for “weeks”. Instead, Hincapie is suddenly back in the conversation for selection.
“Piero, let’s see,” the Arsenal manager said. “If he is able to train the next few days he can be available for Everton, which is great news.”
The mood around him on Friday suggested the squad feel the same. Hincapie moved freely, looked relaxed and, crucially, looked like a player who believes the worst is behind him. There was even time for a classic dressing-room ritual.
As he rejoined the group, the defender was sent through a tunnel formed by team-mates and staff, sprinting between two noisy lines of colleagues. There were cheers, a few playful slaps to the head, and the kind of laughter that usually signals one thing at a training ground: you’re back, now get to work.
For Arsenal, who are juggling domestic demands with the intensity of a Champions League campaign, the sight of another defender returning to the fold is no small detail. Hincapie’s versatility and aggression give Arteta another option at the back just as the schedule tightens.
There was a quieter but no less significant moment for Jurrien Timber. The Dutchman was presented with a special framed shirt to mark his 100th appearance for the club, a milestone that underlines how quickly he has embedded himself into Arsenal’s plans.
Between Hincapie’s early return and Timber’s landmark, Arsenal’s defensive unit walked off the training pitch on Friday looking deeper, louder and just a little more sure of itself before Everton arrive in north London.
