Antonio Conte Addresses Future Amid Manchester United Speculation
Antonio Conte has moved to cool the noise around his future, insisting he is not in “advanced negotiations” with any club despite growing speculation over a move to Manchester United.
The Italian, currently out of work after leaving Napoli at the end of last season, responded directly to reports from La Repubblica that claimed he had already held talks with United’s hierarchy about replacing Michael Carrick in the Old Trafford dugout.
The Italian outlet reported that Conte had spoken with the United board in the aftermath of Wednesday’s bruising 4-1 Champions League defeat to Cesc Fabregas’ Como, and that he had laid down firm conditions: full control over transfers and the freedom to bring in his own backroom staff.
Conte has pushed back.
On Instagram, the former Chelsea and Tottenham boss addressed the swirl around his name, making it clear that, while he is listening, nothing is close.
“My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage,” he wrote.
He went further, rejecting claims about his supposed demands and the perception of his character.
“I have read reports of financial demands and requests for full control that I have supposedly already made to the clubs mentioned, as well as reservations about what has been described as my ‘strong personality’. These reports are unfounded.
“Should a concrete opportunity arise, that will be the time to hold discussions with the club concerned and jointly consider the terms of a potential agreement, with due regard for both parties' needs and the qualities and approach that define my work as a manager.”
The message was clear: Conte is interested in the right project, but he will not be rushed, and he will not negotiate through the media.
United searching, Carrick exposed
The timing of his statement is no coincidence. Carrick’s position has come under intense scrutiny after that heavy loss to Como, a result that left United exposed on the European stage and raised serious questions about the direction of the team.
Carrick is expected to remain in the dugout for Sunday’s Premier League game against Bournemouth, but the mood around Old Trafford has shifted. Sources have indicated that United have already started the process of identifying potential successors, with a shortlist beginning to take shape.
Conte is firmly on that list. So are Eddie Howe, currently out of work after his Newcastle spell, and former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann. All three are understood to be watching developments closely.
The pressure on Carrick is obvious. A humiliating Champions League defeat, uncertainty over the squad’s identity, and the looming presence of heavyweight coaches circling the job have combined to make this one of the most fragile moments of his tenure.
Conte’s record speaks loudly
Conte, for his part, does not need to audition.
As a player, he was a driving force for Juventus and Italy. As a manager, he has built a reputation as a serial winner and a demanding, often combustible, presence on the touchline.
At Napoli, he made an instant impact, winning Serie A in his first season in charge and adding the Supercoppa Italiana in his final campaign. Before that came a blistering introduction to English football: a Premier League title with Chelsea in 2016-17, then an FA Cup triumph the following season, achieved by beating Manchester United in the final.
He returned to London in 2021, this time at Tottenham Hotspur, where his reign burned hot and brief. Sixteen months after walking through the door as Jose Mourinho’s replacement, Conte walked away in March 2023, detonating his exit with an extraordinary news conference in which he attacked “selfish” players and criticised the club’s culture.
That outburst reinforced the image of a manager who will not compromise on standards, even at the cost of his job. It is also the same “strong personality” some reports claim has given clubs pause — a portrayal he clearly felt compelled to address in his Instagram post.
A vacancy waiting to happen?
Right now, the official line is simple: Carrick stays, Conte waits, and United are only “identifying options”.
But football rarely sits still. A bad result against Bournemouth, another flat performance, another round of boos, and the temperature inside Old Trafford could spike again.
Conte has made his stance public: no advanced talks, no agreed demands, no done deal. The courtship, though, has begun. The question is not whether he is ready for a return to the Premier League.
It is whether United are ready for him.
