Mexx Meerdink Shines with Two Goals in Netherlands' 2-1 Win Over Serbia

Mexx Meerdink, the young striker from AZ, lived a childhood dream by scoring twice on his full debut for the Netherlands. The 23-year-old took advantage of an injury to Brian Brobbey and made a decisive impact during the 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory against Serbia at the Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade.

Key Moments in the Match

• First Goal: Meerdink calmly converted a first-half penalty after Crysencio Summerville was fouled.
• Equalizer: Serbia’s Luka Jović scored early in the second half to level the score.
• Winning Goal: Meerdink sealed the win with a sliding finish following a pass from Guus Til in the 78th minute.

This victory marked the Netherlands’ first win in the campaign under coach Xavi Hernández.

Meerdink Reflects on His Breakthrough

"It is a childhood dream. Everything has happened so quickly this week. I felt a little pressure before the penalty, but to score twice and help the team win feels great," Meerdink said after the match.

He moved from being a substitute in the game against Germany to the hero in Belgrade, showing remarkable composure especially when taking the penalty kick.

Praise from Coach and Role in the Team

Xavi Hernández praised Meerdink not only for his goals but also for his tireless defensive work and pressing. Positioned as the main attacking threat, he disrupted Serbia's play and connected well with teammates like Joey Veerman and Guus Til.

The coach confirmed that Meerdink is now the second-choice penalty taker behind Cody Gakpo. The young forward expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him by the coaching staff.

Looking Ahead

Following this success, Meerdink and the Dutch squad focus on their upcoming Nations League match against group leaders Greece in Thessaloniki on October 1, 2026. The forward hopes to keep his spot in the starting eleven and continue his strong form for Oranje.

The return fixture against Serbia will take place in Eindhoven the following Sunday.
