Joshua vs Fury Set for December Clash in Cardiff

After years of speculation, the long-awaited fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is now official. The British heavyweight rivals will face off at Wales's Principality Stadium on Friday, 11 December, with the event broadcast live on Netflix.

The location was a subject of intense debate, nearly leading to the bout being held at Madison Square Garden in New York City—a move that would have stirred controversy. Ultimately, the decision landed on the Welsh venue, with ring walks expected to happen in the early hours of the next day to suit American viewers.

Background of the Fighters and Previous Attempts

Joshua, aged 36, and Fury, 38, both hold the distinction of being two-time world heavyweight champions. Their potential matchup has been debated fiercely for almost ten years. They once agreed to fight in 2021, but the bout collapsed when Deontay Wilder threatened legal action against Fury, resulting in Fury facing Wilder in a trilogy match. Fury won by stoppage to keep the WBC title.

This victory came a month after Joshua lost his unified titles to Oleksandr Usyk. Joshua's defeat was his second career loss, followed by another rematch loss to Usyk in 2022. Interestingly, Usyk also defeated Fury twice in 2024. Despite these setbacks, the Joshua vs Fury fight remained a hot topic.

Recent Activity Leading to the Fight

In April, Fury returned from his fifth retirement and defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov on points while Joshua watched ringside. Soon after, the fight agreement between Joshua and Fury was confirmed, though date and venue details were pending.

Both fighters took tune-up fights. Joshua scored a sixth-round victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul last December, shortly before surviving a car crash that tragically killed two of his teammates. In July, he fought Kristian Prenga, overcoming two early knockdowns to win by a second-round knockout.

Meanwhile, Fury defeated 46-year-old Mariusz Wach in Thailand by seventh-round stoppage, a fight that went untelevised. Around this time, Saudi matchmaker Turki Alalshikh suggested a November date at London's Wembley Stadium, proposing ring walks at 2am GMT to reach global audiences.

Negotiations and Final Decision

Although Joshua's contract stipulated a UK fight, there was discussion about a U.S. venue. Fury and some negotiators favored an American location, but Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn resisted, keeping the fight in the UK.

"Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together," said Turki Alalshikh. "This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history, I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans."
