Inter’s Josep Martinez Confident in Italy’s Rebirth After World Cup Setbacks

Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez has expressed strong belief in Italy’s ability to bounce back following their absence from three consecutive World Cups. The four-time world champions face a challenging rebuilding phase, but Martinez trusts the quality within the squad under coach Roberto Mancini.

Mental Struggles Over Quality Concerns

Martinez views Italy’s recent troubles on the international stage as primarily psychological. Missing out on the last three World Cups shook the confidence of Gli Azzurri. Despite that, the goalkeeper says there is no shortage of talent. Mancini is leading a youth-focused overhaul, aiming to reshape Italy’s playing style and team spirit.

Technical Skill Remains Strong

Having competed alongside top Italian players in Serie A, Martinez is convinced that technical skills remain high. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said: "Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there’s no lack of quality. There are several high-level Inter players and many other valid elements with them. They need to regain confidence after the disappointment of missing the World Cup; for me, it’s more a mental thing than a quality issue."

Martinez Returns to Spain’s National Team

Alongside his comments on Italy, Martinez marked a personal milestone by rejoining the Spanish national squad. He received a call-up from coach Luis de la Fuente for the first time since June 2021, filling in due to an injury to Joan Garcia. Martinez will compete for the goalkeeper spot with David Raya and Unai Simon.

Upcoming Test Against France

Italy’s next big challenge will be facing France at the Stade de France in the UEFA Nations League Group A1. Managed by Zinedine Zidane, the French side presents a tough opponent. Mancini’s tactics will be crucial to securing a positive result in Paris, which could boost morale and keep Italy’s hopes alive for the knockout stages.
