Jaylen Brown Steps into Boxing Ring in Nigeria Ahead of NBA Season

Jaylen Brown is supposed to be easing into a new playbook, a new locker room, a new city. Instead, barely six weeks before the NBA season starts, the five-time All-Star stepped into a boxing ring. In Nigeria.

No one had this on their preseason bingo card.

The 29-year-old, fresh off a summer move from the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers, appeared in the first boxing bout of his life and then casually dropped the footage on his official Instagram account. No training camp. No sparring block carved into his schedule. Brown made it clear: he went into the fight without any specific preparation.

For most players, that would sound like a wild detour. For Brown, it fits a long-running plan.

He has spoken openly about his desire to enter combat sports once his basketball career ends, even taking the idea to UFC president Dana White. This is not some fleeting off-season hobby. It is something he has been circling for years.

The roots run deeper than a single exhibition in West Africa. Boxing has been part of Brown’s routine for a long time, paired with Muay Thai sessions that sharpen his balance, footwork and toughness. The influence comes from family: his grandfather, Willie Brown, worked as a sparring partner during the training camps of Muhammad Ali Clay, a direct line into one of the sport’s most mythic eras.

So when Brown traded the green of Boston for the colors of Philadelphia this summer, he didn’t just bring his scoring, his defense and his Finals pedigree. He brought a fighter’s mindset that now has a literal edge.

Few active players in the league carry his résumé. Brown has five All-Star appearances and, most notably, the 2024 Finals MVP trophy after leading the Celtics to the championship. At 29, he sits squarely in his prime, with a fresh chapter in Philadelphia about to open.

That is what makes this Nigerian detour so striking. While most stars spend September locked in controlled workouts and scrimmages, Brown chose to test himself under very different lights, in a very different arena.

The NBA, though, still comes first. Brown is now turning his attention back to the job that made him a global name. His first season in a 76ers jersey begins on 21 October, when Philadelphia face the New York Knicks to open their campaign.

The ring will have to wait. The pull of boxing and even a future shot at the UFC remains, tugging at the edges of his long-term plans. For now, the question is simple: how far can a man with one foot in the paint and one eye on the fight game push the limits of both worlds?
