Irish Boxers Reach European Championships Quarter-Finals
Three Irish boxers kept their European medal dreams alive in Sofia on Saturday, while another saw hers snatched away in the closing stages of a tight contest.
Jon McConnell, Daina Moorehouse and Lisa O'Rourke all punched their way into quarter-finals at the European Boxing Championships, each now just one win from the podium. Shannon Sweeney, though, fell at the last-16 stage after a punishing finish to her bout.
McConnell keeps momentum rolling
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jon McConnell is starting to look at home on this stage.
Having dispatched Turkey's Necat Ekinci on Thursday, the 23-year-old backed it up with a composed, controlled display against Poland's Damian Durkacz. He took a 4-1 unanimous decision, the judges rewarding his cleaner work and sharper timing in their last-16 clash.
McConnell now turns to a quarter-final on Monday against Italy's Gabriele Guidi Rontani, with a European medal on the line.
Moorehouse edges home favourite
Daina Moorehouse had to walk straight into the noise.
Up against Bulgarian favourite Zlatislava Chukanova, and a crowd fully invested in the home fighter, the Wicklow boxer once again found a way past a familiar rival. She had already beaten Chukanova in the Olympic qualifiers for Paris; she repeated the trick here, this time by split decision.
It was not straightforward. The 25-year-old was forced to take a count in the final round as the pressure rose, yet she dug in, finished strongly enough and emerged with a 3-2 verdict that underlined her resilience as much as her skill.
Her reward is a quarter-final against Spain’s Laura Fuentes Fernandez, a World and European bronze medallist and one of the division’s established operators.
O’Rourke announces her return
Lisa O’Rourke chose not to ease her way back.
The 2022 World champion marked her return to the ring with a dominant points win over Greece’s Vasiliki Stavridou, taking a unanimous decision in their last-16 bout.
O’Rourke controlled the first two rounds, setting the tempo and range, then turned the screw in the third. She forced two standing counts in the final session, leaving no doubt on the cards and sending a clear message to the rest of the field.
Next comes Team GB’s Emily Asquith, and with it the first real chance for O’Rourke to convert her comeback into a European medal.
Sweeney denied after late swing
For Shannon Sweeney, the margins cut the other way.
She started brightly against Italian Chiara Mosetti but lost grip of the contest as it wore on, dropping the final two rounds. The judges handed Mosetti a 4-1 decision, ending Sweeney’s campaign at the last-16 stage.
As the tournament moves into its decisive week, Ireland’s hopes now rest on three fighters, all within touching distance of the medals. The question in Sofia is no longer whether they belong at this level, but how far they can push it.
