Holger Rune's First ATP Tour Match Since Achilles Injury Confirmed at Japan Open
After recovering from an Achilles tendon tear, Holger Rune is preparing for his first ATP Tour match since the injury. Just over a week ago, Rune marked a successful comeback during the Davis Cup, where he helped Denmark win by defeating Iliyan Radulov and Grigor Dimitrov.
The 23-year-old Dane, who was ranked as high as fourth globally, now finds himself at 188th in the world rankings following nearly a year away from competition. His journey back up the rankings will begin at the 2026 Japan Open in Tokyo, a tournament featuring a strong field.
Rune's Japan Open Draw and Potential Opponents
Rune opens his Tokyo campaign against French player Kyrian Jacquet, marking their first meeting on tour. If Rune advances, he faces a tough second-round match against either Casper Ruud or Luciano Darderi.
A quarterfinal appearance would likely pit him against Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti, both players Rune has previously defeated. Should Rune reach the semifinals, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz stands as the most probable opponent.
Making it to the final could set up a clash with US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe or rising star Rafael Jodar, who is just 20 years old.
Rune’s History at the Japan Open and Upcoming Challenges
This marks Rune's third time competing at the Japan Open. He made the semifinals in 2024, losing a close match to Arthur Fils, and reached the quarterfinals last year. With these results, Rune must defend 100 ATP points at this tournament.
Following Tokyo, Rune will look to defend 200 points at the Shanghai Masters, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2025. Then, at the Stockholm Open—the site of his Achilles injury—he will defend 100 points earned from a semifinal finish.
