Chaos at Croke Park: Allen–Carty Heavyweight Clash Ends in No Contest

On a night built to celebrate Katie Taylor’s farewell, the chief support bout at Croke Park produced a very different kind of drama – abrupt, confusing and, for 80,000 expectant fans, deeply unsatisfying.

Dave Allen’s heavyweight meeting with Irish favourite Thomas Carty lasted just 82 seconds and ended in a bizarre no contest, after Carty fell clean out of the ring in the opening round and was unable to continue.

The action had barely settled when it all unraveled. Allen, the 34-year-old Doncaster journeyman, stepped in and swung a clubbing right hand that caught Carty on the back of the head. The Dublin southpaw, already moving, spilled through the ropes more through the force of his own momentum than the punch itself, tumbling out of the ring and crashing to the floor.

Silence replaced the early roars. Carty lay on his back as medical staff rushed to his aid. Oxygen was administered for several minutes, the atmosphere turning from anticipation to concern in an instant.

Eventually, Carty rose and, to a ripple of relieved applause, walked back to the dressing room under his own steam. The fight, though, was done. Officials confirmed it would be ruled a no contest, wiping away what was supposed to be the biggest opportunity of Carty’s 12-fight career.

Allen stood in the ring, arms slightly outstretched, wearing the same bewildered expression as the thousands looking on. This was meant to be a rugged, crowd-pleasing heavyweight scrap to set the stage for Taylor’s final appearance. Instead, it ended before it had really begun, leaving only questions and a lingering sense of what might have unfolded under those Croke Park lights.
