Alex de Minaur Shares Injury Update After Reaching Shanghai Masters Quarterfinals

Alex de Minaur has secured his spot in the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the 10th time, following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov at the Shanghai Masters. With this win, he moves closer to qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin next month.

Injury Recovery Progress

De Minaur entered the Shanghai tournament shortly after retiring hurt in the China Open final against Novak Djokovic, where he was down 6-7(3-7), 1-0 before withdrawing. The Australian provided an update on his groin injury, revealing steady improvement.

"It's been feeling better and better every single day," he said. "It's been seven to eight days since that match, and there’s been a lot of focus on recovery. I’ve been doing everything I can to improve daily. Today was the best day so far. I combined that with strong tennis, good serving, and smart tactics. Overall, it was a very clean match, which I'm happy about."

Strong Tactical Play Against Khachanov

When asked about his backhand winners and other areas of success during the match, De Minaur explained his strategy to keep Khachanov on the move and avoid letting him control points.

"In the first set, I hit a big winner to break serve. There were a few more throughout the match where I trusted myself, and I’m glad I did because if I let him dictate, he’s very dangerous. It was up to me to be the one moving him first and then playing the point from there."

Next Opponent Preview: Zverev or Bublik

De Minaur faces a tough test in the quarterfinals against either top seed Alexander Zverev or 19th seed Alexander Bublik. He commented on both players ahead of their clash.

"Zverev is the number one player in the world. He’s had an incredible year and looks very confident, probably the most in-form player right now. Bublik can beat anyone on any given day. I’m excited to watch their match and see who advances."
  • Head-to-head records:
  • Against Zverev: 4 wins, 8 losses
  • Against Bublik: 4 wins, 2 losses

Earlier in Shanghai, De Minaur defeated qualifier Rei Sakamoto. If he progresses past the quarterfinal, potential semifinal opponents include Arthur Gea, Jakub Mensik, Hubert Hurkacz, or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Possible finalists could be Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, or Daniil Medvedev.
