Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Missing Portugal's Match Against Norway

Jorge Jesus began his time as Portugal’s manager with a winning streak, securing three straight victories. He started with a close win over Wales, then led the team to triumphs against Norway and Denmark on difficult away matches. Currently, Portugal leads its UEFA Nations League group with full points.

Despite this success, challenges have emerged, particularly regarding Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Reason Ronaldo Isn’t Playing Against Norway

The 41-year-old striker has been absent throughout the international break, including the upcoming game versus Norway on Sunday. Ronaldo’s frustration boiled over after being left out during the previous match against Norway last week.

After a poor performance against Wales where he was substituted early, Jesus benched Ronaldo for the next game in Oslo. Although Ronaldo was promised some playing time, he remained on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory. Jesus chose not to risk changing the lineup late when holding a narrow lead.

"I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach," Jesus stated after the match. "No player will ever make a decision for me."

Ronaldo reacted angrily to both his exclusion and Jesus’ comments, deciding to leave the Portugal squad immediately. This means he missed the 4-2 win over Denmark and will also sit out the home game against Norway.

On social media, Ronaldo wrote:

"After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception."

Supporters Rally Behind Ronaldo

Given Ronaldo’s 23 years representing Portugal and his iconic status, many fans quickly showed their support. Billboards appeared around Lisbon and nearby areas expressing gratitude and loyalty to him.

  • Billboard message: "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you."
  • Criticism of Jesus: Fans accused the new manager of mistreating Ronaldo and having an inflated ego.

The situation remains tense for the Portuguese Football Federation as questions about Ronaldo’s future with the national team continue to circulate.
