Wayne Rooney Condemns Cristiano Ronaldo's Controversial Exit from Portugal Squad

Wayne Rooney has openly criticised Cristiano Ronaldo for his dramatic departure from the Portugal national team camp, calling the behaviour "wrong in every sense." The former Manchester United striker expressed disbelief over how Ronaldo handled the situation with Portugal's head coach Jorge Jesus.

Conflict Sparks Over Playing Time

The dispute began when Ronaldo, 41, was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League win against Norway despite warming up for half an hour. The incident triggered a public fallout, culminating in Ronaldo walking out before the next match versus Denmark. He then issued a statement accusing Jesus of breaking promises and even comparing himself to legends like Pele and Diego Maradona.

Public Apology and Manager Attack Draw Backlash

Before this controversy, Ronaldo had enjoyed success under Jesus at club level with Al-Nassr and had recommended Jesus for the Portugal job after the 2026 World Cup. Yet, his public apology to teammates combined with criticism of his coach angered many within the dressing room and the Portuguese Football Federation.

Rooney said on The United Stand: "My thoughts on Ronaldo is just: Why? It was the same day Lionel Messi was retiring from Argentina and for him to come out of the Portugal squad in that way, then put that statement out... It’s just wrong in every sense."
"To undermine your manager, undermine your teammates the way he has - it was just so wrong. To undermine the Portuguese FA, everything about it was just wrong. From a football point of view, from being a teammate and a manager, it wasn’t nice to see."

He added, "It comes to every player. You have to finish international football and unfortunately he’s not dealing with it well. It’s uncomfortable to see."

Disagreement Over Press Conference Comments

Rooney and Ronaldo were teammates at Manchester United from 2004 to 2009, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League together. Despite their shared past, Rooney was particularly upset by Ronaldo's attempt to dictate what the manager should have said in a press conference.

"You can’t tell a manager what he’s got to say. That just goes beyond anything I’ve ever seen," Rooney said.

Portugal Federation Suspends Ronaldo Amid Investigation

The Portuguese Football Federation reacted swiftly, imposing a provisional suspension on Ronaldo from all national team activities starting October 10. An independent disciplinary investigation is ongoing. While Jesus remains in charge and has not closed the door on Ronaldo’s return, the striker insists he is available for future selection.

  • Date of suspension: October 10, 2026
  • Reason: Urgent independent disciplinary investigation
  • Status: Barred from national team activities until investigation concludes
  • Coach: Jorge Jesus
  • Player: Cristiano Ronaldo
