Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Training Collapse

Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, with the club confirming their head coach is undergoing detailed medical checks.

The 38-year-old Belgian, who had been battling a virus in recent days, was observing a session involving Bayern’s reserve team when he suddenly felt unwell and required immediate attention.

Bayern, top of the Bundesliga and fresh from a draining 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, are due to travel to Freiburg on Sunday. Kompany was on the touchline for the Arsenal game despite the infection, cutting a subdued figure at times as his side let a lead slip in Europe.

This time, he could not simply push through.

In a statement on their website, the German champions said: “Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during a training session for Bayern’s reserve team. The head coach of the professional squad had been observing the second team’s session.

“Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations.“

With the schedule unrelenting and Bayern still fighting on multiple fronts, the sight of their coach being taken away for treatment is a stark reminder of the physical toll at the top level — even on those not wearing a shirt and boots.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined the club’s stance in clear terms. “Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.

“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”

While his assistants step in to handle preparations for Freiburg and beyond, Bayern now wait on the outcome of those hospital tests — and on the all-clear for the man entrusted with steering their season.
